Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Do you have access to phpMyAdmin on both servers?

I've been assuming you followed the usual server-move instructions, and my abbreviated numbered list earlier, which involve you importing the old server's data at a specific step in the process.
But I'm guessing you wiped out the imported data, and will need to re-import.

only on the cPanel one - not on the Plesk one.

I thought that step had already been covered as initially I tried to move the old install over the the cPanel server until I uncovered all sorts of incompatibilities with php versions ...

Do I need to retrace my steps? / start again?

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

When I asked my host about the phpMyAdmin on the Plesk server they replied:

"Yes, it is labelled as DB WebAdmin however is archaic - v.2.8.2.4." but it does not seem to do anything.

That is why the hosting company migrated the database to the new server for me ...

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

The order of operations in my initial instructions was important, because running zc_install and choosing "Install" wipes out all the data in existing tables of matching names. (Choosing "Database upgrade" does not wipe any data out, but that's for AFTER you've got the store working.)

So, you're supposed to do an initial install of Zen Cart on the new server FIRST. That's to create the configure.php files (and does a few tests in the background to report potential issues).

THEN you import the data from the old server.

THEN you run zc_install to choose Database-upgrade to update the data if the ZC versions are different between servers.

So, if you wanna get your hosting companies to transfer the data again, go ahead. Or, do it yourself if they'll help you with the tools to get the data.

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Ok. I'll get them to transfer the database contents again. I was not able to follow you sequence exactly due to limitations in the old control panel.

Watch this space .... Thanks again.

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Ok - I have had them move the data over again as I have no tools on the old server.

They have also given me a file called: onlineshop.sql which is 1.5G.

Now when browse the new install I get a standard ZC shop but my products and images are showing ... which is progress.

But at the top it says in a red bar "Your database appears to need patching to a higher level. See Admin->Tools->Server Information to review patch levels."

and when I try to log in to the admin area at:

http://www.petticrows.co.uk/catalog/zc-admin/login.php

I get the message:

database upgrade required. please run the 1.3.9-to-1.5.0 upgrade via zc_install

I'm holding fire getting stuck into that until I get some comment as I now understand the order of action is important ...

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Those symptoms are expected.

Now, put back the zc_install folder, and visit your_site.com/zc_install and choose Database Upgrade

OK - on the 3rd? screen I get an attention message:

/admin/includes/configure.php does not exist more info...
store configure.php is not writeable more info...

Previously I had read an instruction to rename the admin directory ... should I name it back?
Do I just need to do a chmod to 777 on the configure.php file?

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Since you're only doing a database upgrade, you don't need to worry about the admin folder name for config files being writable, since you won't be writing to them. Just click the Database Upgrade button at the bottom.

Ok ... done that ...

I ger the below; the bold ones have a tick box with a tick.

Upgrade DB from 1.2.7 to 1.3.0
Upgrade DB from 1.3.0 to 1.3.0.1
Upgrade DB from 1.3.0.1 to 1.3.0.2
Upgrade DB from 1.3.0.2 to 1.3.5
Upgrade DB from 1.3.5 to 1.3.6
Upgrade DB from 1.3.6 to 1.3.7
Upgrade DB from 1.3.7 to 1.3.8
Upgrade DB from 1.3.8 to 1.3.9
Upgrade DB from 1.3.9 to 1.5.0
Upgrade DB from 1.5.0 to 1.5.1
Upgrade DB from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2
Upgrade DB from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3
Upgrade DB from 1.5.3 to 1.5.4

I also assume I need to enter my log in details for the ZC admin area? Yes?

Please excuse my caution but I am keen not to do things out of sequence again ...

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Yes, your usual admin login credentials will be required.

After you click submit, it may tell you about a number of things "it couldn't do", shown in red bars. I can pretty much guarantee they'll all say "... because it already exists" when trying to "add", or "... because it didn't exist" when trying to "drop". All of those can be ignored.

Arrg ... it says "Admin Password required to proceed with upgrade more info..."

When I set this up I put in the temp password and was later prompted to enter a revised password ... I have not mis-typed it :-(

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Use the OLD admin password. (That's why I said "usual" earlier)
The new one you had set up during initial install was wiped out when the database was replaced with data from the old server.

Ok - used the admin log in details from the old/existing install ...

I have a number off messages in a green bar at the top:

32 statements processed.
62 statements processed.
Note: 4 statements ignored. See "upgrade_exceptions" table for additional details.
13 statements processed.
34 statements processed.
16 statements processed.
6 statements processed.

and the below in a pink bar at the bottom

SKIPPED: Cannot drop index page_accessed on table admin_activity_log because it does not exist.
SKIPPED: Cannot drop index access_date on table admin_activity_log because it does not exist.
SKIPPED: Cannot add index idx_page_accessed_zen to table admin_activity_log because it already exists.
SKIPPED: Cannot add index idx_access_date_zen to table admin_activity_log because it already exists.

Is this completed? What next?

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

That looks good.

You can click the Continue button at the bottom, which will take you to the same "Completed Installation" screen you saw when you did your first install.
So, basically, you can now delete the zc_install folder, and login to your Admin using that same "old" password, and visit the storefront to see your products.

There is no continue button ...

Use "Done with updates". Sorry, I can't remember what the text is on all the buttons! :)

That seem to be the only thing you can remember ...

I have now deleted the zc-install, renamed admin & chmodded the config.php file.

When I go to the store there is a red bar at the top that says:

Re: Upgrade strategy ... (and server move)

Found how to turn the shop back on ... now I need to sort out the appearance of the shop.

Is there a way to lift the appearance and formatting over from the old shop?

Where do I set the shop width and header image?
