Blank page after messing up the files during an upgrade

Okay I really need help. I have completely destroyed my site. (Not intentional - but it happened)
I was still using 1.39h because I hated not being able to store my password which was a new feature on the newer versions so I never upgraded. (Yeah I no it was a security feature - but one I didn't want to fool with.)

After receiving several Paypal errors about not being able to process payment yesterday, a search here lead me to a post from Dr. Byte saying an upgrade to v154 would solve the issue, thus leading me to finally upgrade.

First I did a complete backup of my site. This domain is hosted with Godaddy and they used to do the upgrade for you but that option was no longer available so I did it myself. I downloaded v154 from the Zen-Cart main page and moved the files via FTP. After the upgrade was complete, I could not see the main page of the site, but I could access the Admin area.

After reading and reading, I found that I should not have overwritten the Configure.php files. Soooo, I deleted the new install and started over. After starting over moving all the files via ftp again, same thing. I deleted all the files and I then just tried to upload the backup I performed to bring the old site back online and the site still would not come up.

Now this is my question - I have the initial backup on my computer, is there anyway I can salvage this eff-up? This store has about 600 items, and if I had to I wouldn't mind sitting down and re-doing the site, but my issue is that i couldn't tell you what the products were nor their prices so I would at least need that info. Can I ascertain that info from the backup saved on my computer? Godaddy has been no help at all, I contacted them to get help so that i could at least export the products to a csv file, and the wanktards deleted the database. I really need to get away from them and I think this is the perfect time to do it.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can point me in the right direction.

I'm not totally sure what your situation is ... are you saying that you didn't make a backup of your database and the zc_install process overwrite it, resetting the database contents?

Re: Blank page after messing up the files during an upgrade

I made a complete back up of the site before attempting to upgrade to the newest version of Zen-cart v154, I then moved the files from the old version to the new version and now the main page is just blank.

Re: Blank page after messing up the files during an upgrade

A blank page implies that there's a myDEBUG log file present in your store's /logs or possibly, since you updated from ZC1.3.9, /cache directory that will indicate what the issue is.

So my next step should be? I actually have no idea what you said means.

You have an error log.. which is what a blank page means.. can't tell you what the error log means or how to resolve without knowing what it says..

In the meantime I suggest the following:

You can START with restoring your site.. NEVER EVER upgrade on your LIVE site.. otherwise you end up where you are at with no old or new site..

Create a backup/parallell/dev/test/clone (whatever you want to call it) site which is a CARBON COPY of your live site.. Then you need to follow the OFFICIAL upgrade instructions before attempting this again.. http://www.zen-cart.com/entry.php?3-How-do-I-rebuild-my-site-on-the-new-version-instead-of-upgrading

BTW, your reasoning for NOT upgrading leaves your site vulnerable because your admin logins become your site's WEAK link.. Were you REALLY willing to risk your BUSINESS rather than ensure it's security because you found periodically changing password INCONVENIENT.

Use your ftp program to navigate to the folder logs and/or cache. Look for a file that looks like myDEBUGxxxx. Where the x's represent other data. Post the contents, but, if the filename includes adm, be sure not to show your admin folders name...

Yes but that's not the issue and unimportant to the problem I am having here. When you have over two dozen Zencart sites, remembering passwords for each one was a PITA and yes inconvenience for me and in 8 years not a single issue one either site. Maybe I was just lucky.

This is what it says in the debug file:
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function zen_get_languages() in /home/mogul1/public_html/koreanhotfix.com/index.php on line 12

Re: Blank page after messing up the files during an upgrade

You've somehow copied the /YOUR_ADMIN/index.php file to /index.php. Check the Zen Cart distribution zip and re-upload the proper version of index.php.

It IS IMPORTANT for going forward which is why I pointed it out.. Security should not be considered a PITA.. and YES you were just lucky..

In the meantime if the OPs site is DOWN.. I REALLY do suggest he ROLLBACK and get his live site working again before moving forward with an upgrade.. Upgrading over a live site risks LOSING the live site while working through the upgrade..

Maybe for you but I still choose not to upgrade on the other sites. It's my choice so move on please, that was not why I was here. Run your site they way you choose, and let me run mine the way I choose. Not upgrading to a newer version was NEVER an issue for me. Not trying to get into an argument but you are worrying about the wrong thing.

I am getting off the merry-go-round now.

This solved it. Thank you for your help.

And to everyone that took the time to reply, thank you again for your assistance. It was very much appreciated.
