Edit Classic Template

I have successfully turned off banners, but how do I edit the Classic Template? I want to change the banner at the top of the page and replace it with my content?

In my view:
You do not edit the Classic Template: you create a new template based on it and edit the new one.
You leave Classic well alone to use as a fall-back test-bed for when your custom template does odd things/you have broken it and you need to switch back to the unmodified Classic to see if is faulty too and so help you narrow down the mistake.
