Blank screen when i goto Admin login...... help please...

Hi there

I have just uploaded a fresh copy of Zencart to my hosting space.

The installation was good and i had no issues.

When i goto my domain name the shopping cart is there with no errors.

However, if i then goto my admin i get a blank screen.

I have searched online for similar issues and checked the following :

*Checked to see if the files were all uploaded correctly.... they were

checked the path to the Admin directory ... and thats fine.

Checked my HTaccess file - thats fine

The permissions are set as required for this installation.

So, i am really stuck now and not really sure what else i can try ??

can anyone help or has anyone come across this situation before.....??

I forgot to mention - the hosting package that i have is capable of running zencart with no issues.

the reason why i reinstalled a fresh version of zencart was that i wanted to start a new site so i removed the previous installation of zencart - so i know that zencart works fine...

Yup. Jumping ahead for those just joining, this indicates that PHP 5.2 is being used to serve the ZC store. Need to seek how to increase that to 5.6 (current preferred) through the host...

Ok... am i right in thinking that my previous version of zencart worked because it was using php5.2 where the new version requires php 5.6??

If that is the case would my whole site not work ? in this case the front end is fine and its the back end that is not working - ie the Admin section...

Which identifies first the posted/design limitations of the various versions of ZC.

PHP 5.6 is not the required verson to operate ZC. In fact there are temporary posted solutions to operate ZC 1.5.4 using PHP 5.2 in one of the previous posts. The thing is, the PHP versions are evolving to where in the very near future PHP 5.4 is going to be considered obsolete, then of course soon 5.5. A majority if not the main reason for these version retirements is in the name of security...

Furthermore if your host doesn't support/offer these more recent versions, then would want to question their ability and follow through on maintaining other aspects of security... Only requires one weak link to break a chain...

As for other operation being impacted, no not entirely, it fully depends on what has happened between PHP versions, like for example PHP 5.3 supports function calls such as mysql_query(), but PHP 5.5 for example doesn't but does support mysqli_query()... Thing is, ZC handles/addresses that type thing by having setup functions that are universal and work with the PHP version applicable to that ZC version... This way if a plugin only accesses the database using a ZC function, the code will from the perspective of database access always be up-to-date and functional for the ZC store operated within the design parameters...

Previously, a few days ago i had zencart version 1.5.3 working on the same hosting package that i am using now. the site worked fine.

So, sinse then NOTHING has changed apart from a fresh install of Zencart.

Now, i have read a few threads on the compatability of Php and what versions are used stabily on certain zecart versions.

Zencart version v1.5.3 and zencart v1.5.4 are both compatable with Php version 5.6.... see below...:

Zen Cart v1.5.3 is compatible with PHP 5.3.7* thru PHP 5.6
Zen Cart v1.5.4 is compatible with PHP 5.3.7* thru PHP 5.6 (recommend PHP 5.5 or 5.6)**

So, i think that there may be another issue somewhere .....

I have spoken to the host and they have opened a ticket for me. Not sure when they can suggest anything

See post #2 the same type fix was NOT required with ZC 1.5.3... So yes upgrading the site could cause this message to now display.

Maybe I'm missing something but so far there has been no actual statement of what PHP version is currently being used/applied to the site... There is some vague reference to 5.6. Does an .htaccess file need to be used on this new site that was removed from the old files, is there one in the path for the other functional site but not this one? It would only be needed to support the host's requirement as ZC does not require an .htaccess file in the root of the store.

Could try this...

In the root of your store, create a file with a filename of your random choosing using a standard text editor the filename is to end with .php and contains the following:

<?php echo phpinfo(); ?>

Store the file after editing/creating. Access the file and information about the php version and other settings should be diisplayed... Can report the results here then delete the file.

Let me explain what the confusion was regarding this issue.

The main front end of the site works good. The admin side dosnt work at all.
I did not realise that the PHP Version used by my hosting would effect this.

I was also running two other php scripts together with the shop script and they all worked fine with no issues.

Now, i have spoken to 123-reg and asked their technical team who assures me that the current version on my hosting package is the correct one for the zencart.

However, i went in to my hosting control panel and changed the php version from 5.2 to 5.6.

Then i went to my admin and guess what - it works great !

So, a massive thank you for ALL your replies and help - much appreciated !!! Beers on me guys !

Glad it got worked out... Yes I didn't know about the other scripts so can certainly see where the concern on your side could be.. :) I also didn't want you to lose out on too many more sales if the issue could be quickly resolved. As stated in the earlier posts there were ways to immediately get online with 5.2.17 temporarily used, but glad that were able to get it all straight right away and with a preferred version of PHP.

In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected the timezone 'UTC' for now, but please set date.timezone to select your timezone. in /websites/123reg/LinuxPackage22/fa/tm/oo/*********.com/public_html/admin8/login.php on line 13

Couple of options come to mind: set the timezone in the applicable php.ini or related initialization script, the other is to set it in: includes/extra_configures/set_time_zone.php

Ahh, shoot, missed an obvious fix/issue... I hope that this is a non-issue, but if the above post contained your actual admin directory, then it needs to be changed pronto... The change should simply require ftping into the root of the front end of the site (public_html folder) and then renaming the folder, all else should continue working now...

Thing is the admin directory is supposed to remain undisclosed to the internet side, else lots of unwanteds trying to get to it...

Yes the Admin directory has been renamed and its not disclosed to joe public. Your right about the weird freaks out there trying to get in.

123-reg have done something on their side on the server where the Time zone has been resolved.

I am now in the Admin side of the site doing what i need to do etc.... so, so far everything seems to work. fingers crossed that it will continue to do so.

Its funny how the host technical team always points to someone else rather than doing it themselfs!
