coupon/referral

I'm still confused about the coupon and referral.
I know how to create a coupon. I would like to give out just the one code for both a first use discount
then have it have no more value but be used as a referral code.
Can this be done and how do I do it.

If you want it to remain as a referral code, then once it is used for the first time, go in to your coupon manager and change the settings to 0 discount.
