v1.5.1 and PHP5.5 or 5.6

Maybe I am misunderstanding the upgrade path based on the post that said to use the 1.5.2 code. I am at php 5.2.17 and mysql 5.0.96 and zen cart 1.5.1. The goal is to get to the most recent zen cart version. So maybe a quick sequence of what I should do would help (Not the list of files as that is already in the thread).

Thanks

So, I expect that you'll get some of the specific guidance requested so I'm writing to identify what seemed to be the intent of the original poster...

Takes too long to upgrade, need to restore store to operation now (because PHP 5.5, 5.6 (remember title of this post section) was applied to the site). Once site is restored to operation (modified files applied to allow operation) then also do the upgrade...

That said, and I did assume that you fell into the same situation (elevated PHP above the server requirements identified on the main page of this site) you are on/in an entirely different situation which DrByte has already covered... So the recommended upgrade process is provided at https://www.zen-cart.com/entry.php?3

As such, you would do as also suggested of going directly to the latest version rather than some patchwork or partial upgrade. BTW, as you progress through the upgrade and to apply the described patches, see: https://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.php?215694

Re: v1.5.1 and PHP5.5 or 5.6

The site is currently at php 5.2.17 and mysql 5.0.96, so it is in operation. However it needs to be upgraded also to the current php and MySQL, which will break zen 1.5.1. So does it make sense to do the upgrade listed here, all those files from zen 1.5.2 first, then upgrade php and then I can complete a reworking of the site, in a separate directory to get to 1.5.4 and then install when complete. I'm not sure when the MySQL update would occur though. The idea is for the least down time.

So... It seems that the solution to this has been provided already in the discussion of this thread...

You can operate ZC 1.5.4 on PHP 5.2.17 (see the patches identified in post 22 to all operation/installation while still using PHP 5.2.17)...

Okay, so here's the thing that provides a different perspective of the rebuild by upgrade instruction... It is not instruction, it is further explanation. By following the process of that post, you are creating a backup sales site. It is/becomes completely separate from the original store. While going through the process, you practice how to upgrade your site, you prepare the files to take the place of your active site, and you practice how to manipulate the database from the old version to the fully functional final state. During this entire time your live site remains online and not disturbed. Now, once you have gotten that down, do it one more time to see what it takes, identify any last minute issues then... Then it will be time to do it all to the live site but this time, no "merging"... All the files are ready. The database will just need to be updated which the zc_install process will do for the base ZC data and then you'll need to "repeat" what you did to the database (possibly have created a single file to let it do everything?) to get the demo site ready... As part of the database upgrade, the site automatically goes into maintenance mode which is to be turned off after the store update has been completed.

So, please follow the instructions, don't try to cut corners..
