Make sure Zen Cart does not have maintenance mode enabled (suspect this is not the cause, if you can access the non-admin without issue).

This could indicate there is a proxy somewhere between YOU and the SERVER. Many proxies will respond to a request with a "HTTP 503 - Service Unavailable" message when the proxy is unable to contact the SERVER or times out trying to contact the SERVER. A proxy could also be filtering (altering) the HTTP(s) request and response...

Where are the Zen Cart Debug Logs? Where are the HTTP 500 / Server Error Logs?

If you have litespeed configured as a reverse proxy (sits in front of the real webserver and acts as a cache / load-balancer), this could be part of the headache (especially with installing). Best to disable while installing if possible.

There are also some known issues with some reverse proxies (and PHP cgi configurations) not passing one of the commonly used HTTPS indicators in the request... The article How do I enable SSL touches on this briefly in the section "IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SSL AND ZEN CART".

Other forms of caching (not using a proxy) could cause some issues. Best to disable any of these while installing if possible.

The Zen Cart installer attempts to disable some of the common PHP modules for caching to avoid issues, but it is not able to detect or disable them all (and some hosting providers do not allow them to be disabled). There was also a known bug with the code temporarily disabling XCACHE on some servers - which resulted in an HTTP 500 + blank screen.

Could you kindly share the solution in case anyone else runs into a similiar problem?

litespeed runs instead of apache as the default webserver .. i get much lower cpu use while running litespeed and properly tuned mariadb
like my sitemap crawler can hit it at twice the speed and 1/2 the cpu use

well i do think although it wasnt sying i was locked out i was, after waiting a couple hours, and doing a password reset ..again it finaly took and let me in
(i had even tried the set the password to default thing in mysql, but the code provided didnt work so i tried manualy editing the table, (earlier) then finaly just waiting it out reset and...in)

sorta anticlimatic ater all the rest of the weird issues

ps i had tried multiple times to run the install with apache not litespeed, downgrading, upgrading php
etc etc .. reconfigured apache about a dozen times
all this before posting this out of pure frustration

i am now certain that what the whole issue was is 1.3.9 wont run on mariadb
1.5.4 will run on it however the install script will not install it on it
if you install 1.5.4 on mysql then move or upgrade to mariadb it runs great

if anyone has a test environment and can try testing on apache 2.4 or litespeed and mariadb , centos whm/cpanel newest php etc
(mariadb 10.0.24 since 10.1.x isn't yet cpanel supported)

just to verify my suspicion that it will run on it but not install on it

I will try that on a local dev box, albeit on Ubuntu but not CentOS, as soon as I have some spare time.

Re: cannot upgrade from 1.3.9h to 1.5.4 install page blank

Clean install of Zen Cart 1.5.4 ran successfully for me under Windows 10, Apache 2.4.17, PHP 5.6.14, and MariaDB 10.0.17 (all x64).

Clean install of Zen Cart 1.3.9h ran successfully for me under Windows 10, Apache 2.4.7, PHP 5.3.29, and MariaDB 10.0.17 (all x64).

Upgrade of Zen Cart 1.3.9h to 1.5.4 ran successfully for me under Windows 10, Apache 2.4.17, PHP 5.6.14, and MariaDB 10.0.17 (all x64). Method used: How to rebuild my site on the new version of Zen Cart.

Upgrade of Zen Cart 1.3.9h to 1.5.4 ran successfully for me under Debian 8, Apache 2.4.10, PHP 5.6.14 (FPM), and MariaDB 10.0.22 (all x64). Method used: How to rebuild my site on the new version of Zen Cart.

So at least in my test environments Zen Cart and MariaDB are playing well together. If you find some time and want to dig further... Can you enable full debug for PHP, Zen Cart, and LiteSpeed (or OpenLiteSpeed) and see what (if anything) is generated... I'd be interested in hearing the root cause of the issues you were experiencing if they can be tracked down...

NOTE 1: Used mysqlnd for database connections. DEMO data was used during testing. Stock installations of Zen Cart were used with NO modifications except for applying bugfixes from the Zen Cart official "known issues and workarounds" threads.

NOTE 2: It has been almost two years since the last time I looked at LiteSpeed (for a client). I seem to remember in the past LiteSpeed (and OpenLiteSpeed) requiring conversion of some Apache directives to LiteSpeed equivalents... Especially dealing with directives in .htaccess files.
