Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

I would like to upload a new favicon to my new website that I am building with a fresh start of v1.5.4. Could someone tell me where the image goes for the favicon? I know where the meta tag file is. I just need to know where to upload my favicon.ico to. BTW, does this have to be 16 x 16 or can it be 32 x 32?

Just in case anyone else reading this doesn't know where the meta tags file is like I didn't so many times in the past, it is here: (I need to pay back some for the times the good people on this forum helped me)

includes/languages/english/your_template/meta_tags.php

Line #66 : // define('FAVICON','favicon.ico');

Thanks much,

Silver

Generally they will reside in the root folder of the store. This is where the browsers will look for them if the location is undefined.

16 x 16 is the 'standard' that all browsers will support. Other sizes are optional and somewhat device specific. Personally I've never bothered with anything other than the 16 x 16.

Without that define, the 'standard' filename 'favicon.ico' will be used. You should only need to enable/use this define if you wish to use a different filename for the icon.

The webbrowser tend to cache these icons - so if you've only recently added/changed them you'll probably need to clear the browser cache before they will appear.

Thank you for the reply but I must say that I don't totally understand. You say:

Without that **"define", **the 'standard' filename 'favicon.ico' will be used. You should only need to **enable/use **this define if you wish to use a different filename for the icon.

Don't quite understand what you mean by what I have in bold. do you mean that the "word" define should be deleted? I am a bit confused here. Possibly if you could just rearrange the actual path itself as it would be?

Thanks again,

Silver

Simple answer - leave it as it was *// define('FAVICON','favicon.ico');

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

So if I leave it as it was, how is it going to change to my favicon? Back to my original question. Right now I have ZC as the favicon.

It doesn't.

SilverHD:

Back to my original question. Right now I have ZC as the favicon.

Just replace the zencart favicon.ico file with your own. No other changes needed.

Yes, you CAN give your own icon a different name than the standard default (favicon.ico) and that is where the 'define' comes into play, but there is really no need for it (that comes to mind) .

Example. Suppose you give your icon the name of 'MyPrettyIcon.ico' then in order for the web browsers to 'know' about this unusually named file, you will need to change the metatags file to
define('FAVICON','MyPrettyIcon.ico');

I don't quite understand why you seem intent on making things difficult for yourself :dontgetit

RodG:

Believe me, I am not trying to make things difficult for myself. I just don't see how I am going to replace the ZC favicon by doing "nothing." Something has to change somewhere, otherwise I'm stuck with the ZC favicon. Does that make sense or am on a planet all by myself here?

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

create a 16x16 image of your own, name it favicon.ico and upload it over the one on the server to replace it with yours.

OK, I just did that. Now I am seeing nothing. I think I am going crazy. Please take a look:

Thanks,

Silver

PS. When I use Firefox, I get nothing. When I use IE, ZC is still there???

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

I see a little blue icon in my browser tab in firefox. The browsers cache the favicon.ico and it seems to take a bit before it updates.....there is a trick to getting it too update the favicon in the browser but don't remember exactly what it is. It also shows up in chrome fine.

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

if you go to http://www.lingerieloversboutique.com/favicon.ico it shows fine also, try redoing any bookmark you may have set up to the site and see if that gets it to update the favicon in the browser

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

Looks like you may be right. I guess it just takes time. I redid my bookmark per your suggestion and it took for awhile but then reflected back. Again, I think time will take care of it. Thanks so much for your help. At least now I know for future reference exactly where to upload the thing.

Much appreciated,

Silver

Re: Where does the image for the favicon.ico go?

Another simple way to test the new icon is to use a different browser. I use Opera or Chrome for testing purposes, both browsers automatically erase all history and clean the cache when I shut them down. So the next time I do a test on something then what I see is not a cached copy but the changes I just made.

Worth a thought.
