Shipping Charges for different countries (newbie)

Hopefully this is an easy question. Any advice or points in the right direction are appreciated.

So, I charge shipping cost by weight. Works great in the US. Every so often I get an international order that slips in and it ends up not being enough to cover shipping.

What I'd like to do is:
a) keep same rulers for USA
b) add x amount extra for Canada
c) add y amount extra for other countries

Any way to do this or something similar?

Another thing I consider is only offer orders to US and Canada which would make someone overseas have to contact me to arrange an order.

What shipping module(s) are you using?

I believe I'm using the default shipping module. I haven't installed anything special for shipping. I have a base install plus Westminster New template. Thanks

Then in your Modules ... Shipping ... could you say what shipping module(s) you actually have installed and are using?

I looked at the tips and I think I've hit most of the relevant info.

Modules: Per Unit and Free Shipping are on.

Maybe Zone Rates or Table rates is what I need to install? Thanks

There are several shipping modules that come with Zen Cart then there are addons for things like USPS, FedEx and UPS ...

All can be customized to varying degrees depending on your needs ...

What is the extra charge for anything outside the US and Canada?

If you were able to use your current settings for Per Unit with the extra charges for Canada and Outside the US and Canada would that resolve the problem?

$5, $15 or something. Yes, something as basic as adding a constant value for these places would work. I'm not opposed to learning something more advanced, but not sure where to start.

I'm looking at the shipping zone rate tutorial:

"If a country is not listed, then the module will add a $0.00 shipping charge and will indicate that shipping is not available to that destination.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ORDER CAN STILL BE COMPLETED AND PROCESSED!"

I was hoping to avoid this last part. It would be cool if an address was in some weird locale, it would not allow them to place the order.

Let me try to fool around with something for Per Unit perweightunit shipping module as that one gives you flexibilty on the shipping charge per Product by just changing the weight of the Product ...

I am not sure if the Zone Rate zones would cause more issues or not ... You'd really have to test that to see if you can setup the rates properly based on the total weight of the order for each Zone you have defined ...

Yeah, so what I do now is product A weighs 0.5 lbs, product B 1.0, etc. Then I use the somewhat mysterious per unit calculation to get the shipping charge. Adding 5 and 15 to this I think is what we are talking about, but the zone rates seem like they might work.

I'd just need to specify rate like in the tutorial: 1:3.5,2:3.95,3:5.2,4:6.45,5:7. etc.

Well fool around with the Zone Rate zones shipping module and see if you can get it working right for your shipping needs and if not, I will see what it might take to customize Per Unit perweightunit when I get some free time ...
