vvomble:
No disrespect intended it's mobile sites in general. I said the same about flash and that's slowly disappearing thankfully. mobile sites are like switching from full fat coke to coke zero it's just not as good.
FWIW, I'm pretty much with you in this regard. I positively hate/detest the whole idea of 'responsive templates' and/or other similar technologies. Where possible on my mobile devices I'll pretty much always invoke the 'desktop view'
In my view it goes against the reason why **Tim Berners-Lee ** invented HTML in the 1st place. Prior to this any/all formatting was embedded into documents using any one of a dozen different formats, much like word processors. There was no conformity between them and unless viewed with the software that created them, the pages/documents looked sh!t.
Tim had a great idea with HTML, it provided a simple markup language that wasn't specific to any particular machine or device. The devices themselves handled the formatting (or 'look' of the pages/documents). OK, so the pages/text/documents didn't look the same with every device, but at least they all had the same information.
Then came along this idea of 'responsive templates', which basically means 'Hey, lets provide different data for different devices'. IOW, pretty much back to how things were before Tim came along to simplify things. In fact things are worse now for web page developers/designers than they were before. Not only do we have to contend with different markups for different devices, those devices can use any one of a number of different WebBrowsers, and each will render a page slightly differently. IMO its a real mess.
Having said that, and as has been pointed out several times, we don't/shouldn't be developing stores for ourselves, in order to be competitive we need to satisfy our customers needs, and apparently these customers are 'demanding' a design that looks and works well on their specific device. I've highlighted apparently because that seems to be the consensus among most web developers. I've not seen any empirical evidence that the end customers actually care either way. I have statistical data that indicates that while it is true the number of visitors to a site using mobile devices are increasing each year this isn't being reflected in actual sales. My assumption being that people are using mobile devices to browse, for the actual purchases they come back to a desktop.
Anyway, the real purpose of this post is let you know that you are not alone with your views/opinion.
The world needs dissidents like us. We can't all be sheep. :-)
