qr-code.png on invoice broke my store and admin

I'm using 1.5.5 zip 03/29/2016 with PHP version 7.0.5, vanilla install/upgrade with zero add-ons.
I added a qr-code.png to my invoices (so my customers can share my website when they receive their package) and broke my store and admin. I changed it to qr-code.jpg and everything works again, but I'm worried about image loss.
Please remind me where to allow *.png to my admin/images.

There is no setting to allow using any image format
There is for allowing an upload by a customer

In v155, the default /admin/.htaccess already allows for serving png files from your (renamed) /admin/ folder.
