Making Telephone number a compulsory field
Another way to handle this is to insert some DEFINE text into the sign-up page, where you can say something like:
"Telephone number is vital for shipping tracking, and courier notifications. If you do not provide a valid number, we may have difficulty resolving delivery problems, should they occur"
