505 Errors on new install: .htaccess: Regex could not be compiled

I'm getting the following error:
/.htaccess: Regex could not be compiled

I have not edited the .hta file. There are no plug ins installed. I've been wrestling with this for about a week.

Ah, proof positive I used to be smarter than I am now. :) However, I was also leaving myself open to something new about this version of ZC, too.
