Avonlee mobile template subcats not showing

Hi,

Since I updated the site to latest version V1.56a because the provider updated to php 7, the responsive template doesn't show subcategories when I click on a category. I'm using this template: Avonlee Contempo and Avonlee Contempo mobile.

When I use google developers, set a small screen so that the template switches to mobile template automatically, I see the page source for some reason stopping after:

<!-- BOF: Display grid of available sub-categories, if any -->

None of the subcategories are shown. When I comment out (tpl_index_categories.php):

The new and featured products are shown because there is a problem in the above line. Who can point me in the right direction?

Server uses PHP Version 7.1.26
Database patch level 1.5.6
