Why is Google not listing my products?

Hi Guys

I installed Ultimate URL's plugin as I presumed that it was better to have better SEO SE friendly URL's for the keywords they contained.
However I just read on a closed forum by Schoolboy that it was better not to use the SEO pugins as they caused various types of issues.

I couldn't get the Ultimate plugin to work anyway as it resulted in 403 errors and I went down too many rabbit holes trying to resolve this issue so I just uninstalled it now.

I am using Zencart 1.5.6c and have successfully installed EP4 which after some teething issues with excel formats mangaed to esolve these issues by using LibreOffice to open and save the excel files into CSV's.

I also have sitemapXML 3.9.6 installed and it provides this :

http://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap.xml

Which contains the following

http://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap/sitemapcategories.xml 2020-07-22
http://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap/sitemapmainpage.xml 2020-07-22
http://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap/sitemapmanufacturers.xml 2020-07-22
http://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap/sitemapproducts.xml 2020-07-22

But for some reason Google is not listing my products.

So I am unsure it it has to do with the URL's or the sitemap or metatags or robot.txt file which I am using the default :

User-Agent: *
Allow: /

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to why Google is not listing my products.

At most with site:gotitall.co.za there are 3 listings only.

Lastly I am wanting to add an extra field for Product supplier.
At the moment I add a code to the end of each product model but it is causing other issues with images names etc which I save a product model.
I am using Product manufacturer so cannot use that field instead.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Schoolboy and others that have been or are in the forum have their reasons to state that "friendly" URLs should not be used.

There have been two general issues that have been brought up, one is that in order for them to be of use for the long run, the software associated (resulting URL) needs to be maintainable which means that either that software or something else must continue to exist (and be functional) in order for them to continue to be of any use.

The other issue "identified" is whether the "friendly" URL provided any benefit what-so-ever to ranking.

I guess a third might be any "lag" in landing on a page as a result of any additional processing needed to resolve the URL either as provided or as to be generated when using the standard Zen Cart dynamic URL.

Now that said, a properly installed Ultimate URL software package generally speaking should not cause such turmoil when the .htaccess is properly formatted/code incorporated. A similar plugin (Ceon URI Mapping (SEO)) could also be used, though it does not appear that the latest version of the software has been posted to the ZC plugins forum. A version compatible with ZC 1.5.6+ (and backwards compatible as well) exists and is posted, but it does not appear in the plugin list for some reason: https://www.zen-cart.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2250. The forum thread for it is found in that page.

Now as far as google identifying items? It takes time... Your site is one of how many in the world? If there is any information captured about the site, then it is doing its thing.
Have you established a webmaster account, claimed ownership of the site, etc...?
Nothing of what was listed appears to indicate that pages are being blocked, so when the bots take their chance to review and evaluate, then links/pages should be seen.
In the mean time, be sure to review the page(s) to ensure that the html validates, where able/necessary consider use of other google related tools such as micro data and the like...

But again, it takes time.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

One reason that Google might be ignoring your site is that the site's not running https-all-the-time. All the links generated in your sitemap.xml are http:// protocol.

Okay thanks. For now I have uninstalled Ultimate URL's. Yes I have claimed ownership of the site with Google.
I did originally create a sitemap and basic robot.txt file and submitted to Google with 24 hours I had 1000's of listings.
Then I continued making changes as you do to improve the site etc. and not exactly sure what I did but all of a sudden Google just dropped my site.

I am unsure exactly which change I did and do not want to restore as too many changes have taken place.
So I need to start again with regards to sitemap and robot file.

This is my current robot.txt

Sitemap: https://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap.xml

User-Agent: *

Allow: /

With regards to sitemaps lat9 below mentions https vs http and I am unsure how to get sitemap.xml plugin to generate https instead of http.
I've tried to research this subject but just can't get my head around it.

Is there perhaps a setting in Zen admin for sitemap.xml that I can change this setting ?

Attachment 19101Attachment 19102

I have applied for an SSL certificate from my hosts so should get it soon.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

To get the sitemap.xml to generate https:// protocol links, you'll need to update your storefront /includes/configure.php, ensuring that both the **HTTP_SERVER **and **HTTPS_SERVER **values both start with https:// and that the **ENABLE_SSL **setting's value is true.

Remember that the file gets marked read-only on each page refresh, so you'll need to change the permissions and make the change quick-as-a-bunny.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Okay so this is the configure.php file :

define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://www.gotitall.co.za'); so need to add an "s" here after http and before //www.gotitall.co.za
define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'https://www.gotitall.co.za');

define('ENABLE_SSL', 'true');

define('DIR_WS_CATALOG', '/');
define('DIR_WS_HTTPS_CATALOG', '/');

define('DB_TYPE', 'mysql'); // always 'mysql'
define('DB_PREFIX', ''); // prefix for database table names -- preferred to be left empty
define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8mb4'); // 'utf8mb4' or older 'utf8' / 'latin1' are most common
define('DB_SERVER', 'localhost'); // address of your db server
define('DB_SERVER_USERNAME', 'xxxxxxxxxxx');
define('DB_SERVER_PASSWORD', 'xxxxxxxxxx');
define('DB_DATABASE', 'xxxxxxxxxxx');

Is this correct ?

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

You need to regenerate and resubmit all those sitemaps, since the regeneration will create links in those sitemaps using the https:// protocol.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Okay great. Google is pulling through the URL's correctly, however before I did these changes there were 6172 products and now our site only shows 3593 products.
It there perhaps another database that was created that this new generation has omitted or is there another reason these products could not be showing ?

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Hi Guys

So it's been 8 weeks now and google is still not listing my pages.

I have now built a test site and starting from scratch.
I have installed :
CK Editor
Easy Populate
Pure CSS Mega
RFQ
SitemapXML

On the original site I installed all of the above as well as Ultimate URL's which I could not get to work.
I will stay clear of this plugin as after much research have come to the conclusion it is not necessary.
Either a DB issue or a conflict with SitemapXML

I also added a SSL certificate.

Zen is 1.5.6c

So everything is working well in the test site and I have created the sitemap.
An interesting thing that I noticed is that the sitemapXML generated in my original site is slightly different to my TESTSHOP site

The difference is the "www."

Click image for larger version.

Attachment 19139

Attachment 19140

Now I am unsure exactly what settings need to be changed in the sitemap XML configuration so I have left them unchanged

Click image for larger version.

Attachment 19141

So I followed the instructions and this is my robot.txt file

Sitemap: https://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap.xml

User-Agent: *

Allow: /

Note it is https and has the www.
I would like to add my SHOPTEST site and would like to know if I can add it to the same robot.txt file found in my root ?

So like this :

Sitemap: https://www.gotitall.co.za/sitemap.xml
Sitemap: http://gotitall.co.za/SHOPTEST/zen-c...19/sitemap.xml

User-Agent: *

Allow: /

Also I would like to know why one has http vs https and why the one has www. and the other doesn't.
Could this be why Google has not been listing my products ?

site:https://www.gotitall.co.za
site:gotitall.co.za

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

The information populating the results of say SiteMap comes from the store itself... So, if it is generating all http: type URLs, that is because in includes/configure.php the HTTP_SERVER constant is defined with: http://

Same goes for the presence/absence of www. at the beginning of the page address.

If that value is defined as http://www[dot]domain but all visits are going to https://domain, then there is something "outside" of ZC that is changing the address seen by the browser. This is typically something within an .htaccess file that was added to the root or above the root.

As far as format of the robots.txt file, might I suggest looking through the internet for that or similar examples. While there certainly are those here that may be able to directly answer, the forum site is slightly more targetted at the software that makes the site visible...

Now as far as which way the server should be referenced, if a SSL certificate has been generated, it would be suggested that the server information for the site be the same as or compatible with the associated domain of the SSL certificate. Otherwise may have other "compatibility" issues from different browsers and search engines.

I since uninstalled this plugin but fear that the changes remain. I never could get this plugin to work either. I got the SSL certificate and this is where the problems began. I had over 6000 google listed pages and then one morning all gone. I only got the certificate to increase our appeal to google not because I needed any extra security as our customers do not enter their banking details. All payments are EFT and conducted externally of Zencart.

So yes, there is a problem, even if it is a "small" one. In the current configuration of ZC (based on the includes/configure.php file) for the original live store, all links generated on the page that are to point at the store are of the format: <https://www> . domain (no gaps and the remaining information is provided). In general this is fine and good. (doesn't appear problematic). So then there is the SSL, looking at the details for the certificate as available from my mobile device indicates that it is "originally" for www . your domain and that it also supports not having the www prefix. Ok, so that's somewhat good. I mean, seems to indicate that either "style" is acceptable. So then we go to the htaccess file. Here, and I wouldn't even say that this is something specific to the USU plugin, the first rewrite rules evaluate like so based on trial-and-error: if I enter the uri as https:// www . domain, then the site loads with that in my browser, all internal links point to a Web address of the same format. Check. If I enter: https:// domain, I land on the page with that same uri, but all internal links point to https:// www . domain... hmm, not so good or not as good whichever way you want to evaluate it. Now I enter: http:// www . domain this is where things get a little weird. The htaccess file appears to say, if the address being processed equals domain and the method used to access that domain is through port 80 (which is the typical port for http:) then rewrite the address to go to the https:// domain and include any further/additional information passed through the uri. So, what happens though is I've entered http:// www . domain and instead of the address being left alone as I would have expected, it gets converted to https:// domain. And then every internal link points to https:// www . domain oye... Similar result if just entering http:// domain, though at least there is one less "change". Normally, the expectation is this: all uris go to the same final destination which is either with or without www. with all going to https:. Only part of that is covered by the rule that has been added to the htaccess file. (note that the rule(s) added do not match what would be expected for an installation of USU). At any rate, suggestion would be to modify the .htaccess rule to read as this for an all <https://www> address: ``` RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.gotitall.co.za/$1 [R,L] ``` This would align with what is in your includes/configure.php file. The certificate appeared to support that type of address and when I have accessed the site with <https://www>. my picky browser didn't return any SSL errors, but there may be others reporting differently. To change to a non-www prefix address, would need to modify the includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php files as well as the rule(s) in the .htaccess file so that it would force to https: and force to a non-www prefix address. Will all of this correct the issue described? Maybe, there may also be other issues, but I'm not in a position to be able to investigate further.

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

We're not ever going to get everything standardized in this area.:no:

Some hosts got nervous back in 2014 when TLS was being removed in favor of strictly SSL and some of them redirected port 80. Some even turned it off, so I'm not going to put a port 80 call in .htaccess without knowing its status.

As to the www, some hosts and SSL suppliers will not issue a certificate without www even though it itself is archaic. For years now, a website can be reached with or without the www which is a subdomain originally designed to indicate that the address was a public website. Everything's been public for years. I still remember some business cards with small, barely readable, font that included http://www..... We all know that YOUR_SITE.com will get you there every time. BUT, will it get you to http:// or https://? That's where a 301 redirect comes in. (see code below)

Standardizing the use or non-use of the www is especially essential for users of Zen Cart.

If you don't have a total SSL for your site, browsers may warn or even block customers from your site.

If your SSL is for www.YOUR_SITE.com, setting the Zen Cart configure.php files for https://YOUR_SITE.com can get at least a warning and sometimes a lockout (Can't access my admin after installing an SSL)

We recommend that all SSL certificates are for non-www (https://YOUR_SITE.com) and both configure.php files are set to https://YOUR_SITE.com with both having the ENALBE_SSL set to 'true'.

Lastly of the items is the .htaccess. A .htaccess file is not provided with the Zen Cart installation. IF one is added, either by setting a PHP level or redirecting the URL, we would not recommend any mention of port 80 as it may not even be turned on. No, that is not standard but, how many times have we found non-standard to be the standard?:P

The following is a generic .htaccess, 301 redirect made with a free online generator. It takes any input and forces them all to become https://YOUR_SITE.whatever where whatever is .com, .net, .co.za, etc.```

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Hi Guys

I am experiencing similar issues.
I really cannot get this correct at all and have messed up my entire website and earnings since March as I have not had one product listing in Google since March.
My website currently has over 7000 products and not one listed.

I tried so many things to try rectify this issue I broke my site over a dozen times to the point I CTRL ALT DEL 'ed the server and start from scratch.

I've deleted all sitemaps with google search console and now resubmitted fresh.

I don't think my fresh site is SSL but I have purchased the certificate.

Can someone please please please help me with this http vs https issue.
Would redirects help and could I build 2 robot files ?
One for http and one for https.

I am using SitemapXML plugin and not sure if my settings are correct and not sure if its producing http or https sitemaps.

Please advise

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Your SSL certificate is issued for https://www.gotitall.co.za. You have not set the site to go "fully secure".

That's done in both configure.php files by setting includes/configure.php to```
/** * Enter the domain for your store

  • HTTP_SERVER is your Main webserver: eg-http://www.yourdomain.com
  • HTTPS_SERVER is your Secure/SSL webserver: eg-https://www.yourdomain.com
    */
    define('HTTP_SERVER', 'https://www.gotitall.co.za');
    define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'https://www.gotital.co.za');

/**

  • If you want to tell Zen Cart to use your HTTPS URL on sensitive pages like login and checkout, set this to 'true'. Otherwise 'false'. (Keep the quotes)
    /
    define('ENABLE_SSL', 'true');
    and the YOUR_ADMIN/includes/configure.php to
    /
    *
  • Enter the domain for your Admin URL. If you have SSL, enter the correct https address in the HTTP_SERVER setting, instead of just an http address.
    /
    define('HTTP_SERVER', 'https://www.gotitall.co.za');
    /
    *
  • Note about HTTPS_SERVER:
  • There is no longer an HTTPS_SERVER setting for the Admin. Instead, put your SSL URL in the HTTP_SERVER setting above.
    */

As it is, a person (or bot) can reach your site four ways:
1. <http://gotitall.co.za>
2. <https://gotitall.co.za>
3. <http://www.gotitall.co.za>
4. <https://www.gotitall.co.za>
Your certificate matches number 3 so, all the others should be redirected to number 3. This can be done through a control panel or by adding a .htaccess file to the root of your site.

Google is showing items from your site but, I imagine they are getting frustrated with all the changes you have been making. After properly setting the configure.php files and setting up a 301 redirect, things should settle back down.

BTW: Experience has told us that any bookmarks that do not go to number 3 above will "bomb" out when used after the SSL and 301 correction. If you bookmark your admin as <http://gotitall.co.za/YOUR_ADMIN>, it will probably fail until you change it to <https://www.gotital.co.za>[/YOUR\_ADMIN](https://www.gotital.co.za/YOUR_ADMIN).

Re: Why is Google not listing my products?

Okay thanks.

I have edited the 2 config files and uploaded.

I have no idea about redirects and even though I have read alot of articles I am unable to complete this step.
I understand the process of redirects and what it achieves but have zero knowlege with regards to the code reuired..

Here is my current .httaccess file :

@copyright Copyright 2003-2016 Zen Cart Development Team

@license http://www.zen-cart.com/license/2_0.txt GNU Public License V2.0

@version $Id: Author: DrByte Tue Oct 13 14:49:06 2015 -0400 Modified in v1.5.5 $

This is used with Apache WebServers

The following blocks direct HTTP requests to all filetypes in this directory recursively, except certain approved exceptions

It also prevents the ability of any scripts to run. No type of script, be it PHP, PERL or whatever, can normally be executed if ExecCGI is disabled.

Will also prevent people from seeing what is in the dir. and any sub-directories

For this to work, you must include either 'All' or at least: 'Limit' and 'Indexes' parameters to the AllowOverride configuration in your apache/conf/httpd.conf file.

Additionally, if you want the added protection offered by the OPTIONS directive below, you'll need to add 'Options' to the AllowOverride list, if 'All' is not specified.

Example:

#<Directory "/usr/local/apache/htdocs">

AllowOverride Limit Options Indexes

#</Directory>
###############################

deny everything

<FilesMatch ".*">
<IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
Require all denied
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from all
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>

but now allow just certain necessary files:

<FilesMatch "(?i).*.(js|css|html?|ico|jpe?g|gif|webp|png|swf|flv|xml|xsl|otf|ttf|woff|eot|svg|map)$">
<IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
Require all granted
</IfModule>
<IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>

IndexIgnore /

<limit POST PUT> <IfModule mod_authz_core.c> Require all denied </IfModule> <IfModule !mod_authz_core.c> Order Allow,Deny Deny from all </IfModule> </limit>

NOTE: If you want even greater security to prevent hackers from running scripts in this folder, uncomment the following line (if your hosting company will allow you to use OPTIONS):

OPTIONS -Indexes -ExecCGI
