Trademark in the Navigation Bar

This is the support thread for the mod that adds the company name to the Navigation Bar on the desktop, mobile, and tablet views. It allows a site to have the legal name prominently displayed at the top of every page the customer visits.

It applies to versions 1.5.7, 1.5.8, and the current 2.0.0 beta.

When approved, this mod will be available at https://www.zen-cart.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2378

The current github locastion for the mod is https://github.com/dbltoe/Trademark

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

For ZC 2.1.0., this can be done a lot easier by using the existing store name and eliminating the need for language files.

For bootstrap template, add the following line as a new line in includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_header.php after ```

<nav class="navbar fixed-top mx-3 navbar-expand-lg rounded-bottom" aria-label="<?= TEXT_HEADER_ARIA_LABEL_NAVBAR ?>"><nav class="navbar fixed-top mx-3 navbar-expand-lg rounded-bottom" aria-label="<?= TEXT_HEADER_ARIA_LABEL_NAVBAR ?>"> ``` ``` <?php echo STORE_NAME; ?></p> ```

in responsive_classic, search for the following:

<?php if ( $detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() || $_SESSION['layoutType'] == 'mobile' ) {
echo '<div class="header Fixed"><a href="#menu" title="Menu"><i class="fa-solid fa-bars"></i></a></div>';
 } else if ( $detect->isTablet() || $_SESSION['layoutType'] == 'tablet' ){
echo '<div class="header Fixed"><a href="#menu" title="Menu"><i class="fa-solid fa-bars"></i></a></div>';
} else {

Replace that with:

<?php if ( $detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() || $_SESSION['layoutType'] == 'mobile' ) {
echo '<div class="header Fixed"><a href="#menu" title="Menu"><i class="fa-solid fa-bars"></i></a><?php echo STORE_NAME; ?></p></div>';
 } else if ( $detect->isTablet() || $_SESSION['layoutType'] == 'tablet' ){
echo '<div class="header Fixed"><a href="#menu" title="Menu"><i class="fa-solid fa-bars"></i></a><?php echo STORE_NAME; ?></p></div>';
} else {

For your CSS:

In bootstrap, add the following to your site_specific_styles.php:

`.tradeMark {float:left;
margin:0;
padding:0;
color: #FFFFFF; (or the code for .leftBoxHeading)
font-size: 1em;
font-weight:normal;
}

If you are using responsive_classic or a clone thereof, I suggest you should have an override css stylesheet like includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/stylesheet_zcustom.css add the above rule to that file.

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

What jurisdiction is demanding this? And how do they define "prominently"?

The normally-nitpicky EU is ok with a link in the footer to the legal contact details of the shop owner.

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

A US trademark lawyer in New Hampshire was the driving force behind this for topkayakerDOTcom.

It was require to issue a trademark.

The trademark name had to be somewhere in the text of every page.

All I know is the attorney said just having the URL matching did not suffice, but doing it as we did complied with the law as was interpreted by the lawyer.

I thought it odd that not R, TM or C was required, but was told it was not.

To me, it seemed like a good idea regardless. It keeps your name in front of the customer.

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

I've just uploaded version 1.1.0 for submission.

This version removes the need for separate definition files and provides specific instructions for responsive_classic and ZCA-Bootstrap-Template through version 3.7.8. It works with Zen Cart versions 1.5.7 - 2.2.0 and PHP versions 7.4 - 8.4

When approved, it will be available here.

The GitHub release is available here.

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

Just uploaded v2.0.0, which is an encapsulated version of the mod.

Changelog

All notable changes to this project are recorded here. This project follows
Semantic Versioning.

2.0.0 — 2026-09-03

Rewritten as an encapsulated zc_plugin. Install it from Plugin Manager and
the mark is on every page; nothing in your template is edited, copied or
overridden, and uninstalling puts everything back.

If you're running 1.1.0 or earlier — the file-based version that replaced
tpl_header.php — the plugin notices the mark your template already carries
and adds nothing, so you can install it first and remove the old edits when
convenient. See Upgrading from the file-based mod in the readme.

Added

  • One codebase for Zen Cart v1.5.8 through v3.0.0 and PHP 7.4 through 8.5,
    verified against all six release branches.
  • Works with responsive_classic and ZCA Bootstrap (3.3.0 through 3.8.0), and
    with clones of either, with nothing to configure.
  • Custom Anchor setting for any other template: name an element by id or
    class (id=navMain, class=navbar) and the mark goes inside it. An exact
    HTML fragment also works where the admin lets you type one.
  • Settings for the text (your store name unless you say otherwise), an optional
    ™ / ® / ℠ symbol, the color, font size and font weight, and which of the two
    responsive_classic locations to use.
  • An optional top-of-page fallback for a page where nothing else matches, off
    by default.
  • The stylesheet can be overridden from your template (a trademark.css in its
    css/ directory is used instead) or switched off entirely if your template
    already styles .tradeMark.
  • Self-contained readme.html shipped with the plugin and linked, with the
    GitHub project page, as buttons in the Plugin Manager info panel.
  • Idempotent installer. Settings you've changed are never reset by an upgrade;
    labels and help text are refreshed to the current version.
  • While the plugin is switched off, Plugin Manager lists it as Trademark - Mod
    Not Turned On
    , on every supported release.

Fixed

  • 1.1.0 white-screened the phone and tablet layouts on PHP 8. Its
    tpl_header.php files referred to HEADER_TITLE_TRADEMARK, whose language
    file had been removed from the package, and on PHP 8 an undefined constant is
    a fatal error. The plugin has no language constant to lose: the text comes
    from your settings or your store name.
  • 1.1.0's responsive_classic files for 1.5.8 and 2.0.0 never showed the mark in
    the desktop navigation, despite the README saying they did. The plugin shows
    it there on every layout.

Removed

  • The per-version tpl_header.php replacements and the ZCA Bootstrap edit
    instructions. Neither is needed any longer.

1.1.0 — 2026-01-06

File-based mod: replacement tpl_header.php for responsive_classic on Zen Cart
1.5.7d, 1.5.8a and 2.0.0, plus instructions for editing ZCA Bootstrap's header
by hand. Superseded by 2.0.0.

Re: Trademark in the Navigation Bar

Plugin ID fix for copies downloaded from the Plugins Library

If you downloaded Trademark v2.0.0 from the Plugins Library before 6 October, its manifest.php carries the wrong Plugin ID, 2183, which belongs to another plugin. Plugin Manager uses that ID to check for updates, so it couldn't tell you about a new release. The Library's packaging step wrote the wrong number, and the Zen Cart team fixed its copy on 6 October. Copies from GitHub always carried the right ID, 2378.

To check yours, open zc_plugins/Trademark/v2.0.0/manifest.php and look at the 'pluginId' => line. If it says 2183, here's the fix. On Zen Cart 2.2.0 and later, download v2.0.0 again, replace that manifest.php with the new one, and open Plugin Manager once; it picks up 2378 by itself. On 1.5.8 through 2.1.x, Plugin Manager keeps the ID it recorded when it first saw the plugin, so run this line in Admin > Tools > Install SQL Patches (it adds your table prefix itself):

UPDATE plugin_control SET zc_contrib_id = 2378 WHERE unique_key = 'Trademark';
