Is There A Category Restrict By Customer??

Hi,

In searching the forums, I have found an old plugin for Category Specific Access Restriction but it has not been updated to work with the current Zen Cart. Is this due to Zen Cart now contain ways of doing this??

I am looking to offer a subscription to my customers that would grant them free products throughout a month. I would set up a new Category for this....but I would want this category to only be available to view, etc. with those who have paid for the subscription.

I have looked at Customer Groups, but it appears to only have the ability to give them special pricing....not restrict access to certain Categories.

Has anyone else had experience with adding subscriptions on a site that also sells to the general public?

Thanks for your input!

Yes, I know the plugin you are talking about, I used it for a customer once.

I think that HideCategories will work for you. Even though is not the perfect solution, I believe it will work for you.

The plugin will hide a specific category from the menu and from search (depending on your settings).

Then, you give the direct link only to those that bought your subscription.

i have looked at this plugin; and while well intentioned, i would not recommend it.

i would think this could all be done using a single observer file on the storefront side without the need to modify any core files.

best.

Which specific technical deficiencies in Hide Categories led you to advise against using it?

Have you identified a bug, a security vulnerability, or a specific technical problem?

Please, any suggestions are welcome.

you are overriding core files. the number of files in this plugin is onerous. you are asking store owners to run sql scripts.

is that enough?

this whole thing can conceivably be done with a single observer file that does none of those things.

i will now remain silent on this thread.
