Google SitemapAdmin

voltage:

Look at the thread I started in this section called 'Contribution Key.' Andrews site has possibly gone down for a bit so I'm hosting these mods in the meantime. I'll be putting them in the downloads section soon.

Thank you. I can't wait until you host this. The other site is down and has been for several weeks. If someone has a copy of Google Sitemap Admin, I would be glad to host it myself.

Voltage,

The issue is not that you haven't listed the file. The issue is the listed file does not download. The link provided is broken or the person who was hosting this file is no longer hosting it.

I appeciate your contribution key. It makes looking for files helpful. The Google Sitemap link needs to be updated.

Thank you for updating the link. I was expecting the initial link to be modified and that was what I continued to click on. I did not realize you had updated the link via "reply".

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

I got everything works for this Google Sitemap. My question is what are the value of Priority as listed in the sitemapcategories.xml and sitemapproducts.xml? Some link has value of 1.0, 0.1, 0.5 as below. Can we change these priority?

  • <url> <loc>http://www.magicdigitalframes.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=10</loc> <lastmod>2006-07-11</lastmod> <changefreq>weekly</changefreq> <priority>1.00</priority> </url>
  • <url> <loc>http://www.magicdigitalframes.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1</loc> <lastmod>2006-07-11</lastmod> <changefreq>weekly</changefreq> <priority>0.1</priority> </url>

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

Hi - I'm having trouble crossing the finish line with this module. I believe that I've properly followed the steps and indeed Google XML SiteMap has been added to both my Admin/Configuration & Admin/Tools. Admin/Configuration seems to be operating as it should. However, when I click on Tools/Google XML Sitemap I get a HTTP 404 - File not found.
As I understand it, this may be corrected by changing my permissions to 777. I've attempted to do this, but as soon as I make the change from 666 to 777 it reverts back to 666.

Also, I read in one of these threads about uploading the XML files to Google. Am I supposed to upload directly to Google? I was under the impression that we were to just upload all files to the store directory, putting the individual files in the appropriate folders (either Admin or Include) and leaving the loose files, such as the XML files, loose.

(Boy does that sound convoluted. I hope it makes sense to someone)

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

You will need to create your account with google and register your sitemaps. You can do this by following this link. https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=sitemaps&nui=1&continue=https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview%3Fhl%3Den&hl=en

You will need to set your information up on the google side. Google will need to know what your website is and what type of files you are submitting. You will also need to verify your website with google. They will have you place an html file in your root directory. Google will search for this file. Once it finds it, you will be verified.

Once you have the google portion of your website setup, it is as simple as just creating the file and telling google that they are ready. (Google Sitemap Admin) will do this for you if properly configed.

Thanks for responding - OK - I've created an account with Google Sitemaps and my /shop is verified.
Creating the file and telling Google to go and get it seems to be the hitch. As I mentioned, Google XML Sitemap in the Admin/Configuration seems to be operating as it should. However, when I click on Tools/Google XML Sitemap I get a HTTP 404 - File not found.

I seem to have mucked something up at this point - Any suggestions?

Thanks again

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

I know this may seem somewhat basic, but please check your admin directory and verify that it has a file named googlesitemap.php.

If it does, I would consider walking through the simple installation instructions again and check to verify that all the included files were uploaded properly. If it doesnt, you need this file and missed it during installation.

Can you verify that the SQL was updated? Did you complete step #2 of the installation which stated > 2. Load sql path;

Q: Will the "priority" hint in the XML Sitemap change the ranking of my pages in search results?

A: No. The "priority" hint in your Sitemap only indicates the importance of a particular URL relative to other URLs on your own site.

The priority of this page relative to other pages on the same site. The value is a number between 0.0 and 1.0, where 0.0 is the lowest priority and 1.0 is the highest priority. The priority can affect the order that search engines select URLs to explore on your site. Since the priority is relative, it is only used to select between URLs within your own site; the priority of your pages will not be compared to the priority of pages on other sites.

You can change the priority hint under configuration / Google xml sitemap

I will walk through these steps, as suggested, but while I have you on the line, so to speak, I'd like to confirm the process of updating the SQL, because there is doubt on my part that I'm doing it correctly:
From Admin/Tools I select "Install SQL Patches."
I copy and paste the contents of googlesitemap.sql into the SQL Query Executor and hit send, which does give me the green light indicating that all is well.
At this point, even though it seems highly redundant, I selected that same file and uploaded it, also receiving a green light.
Is this procedure? (I must say that if the SQL file is being added once or twice, the results seem to be the same)
How would I actually verify that the SQL was updated?

Thanks again

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

glock - Got it!

As you obviously suspected, I did indeed neglect to add the googlesitemap.php to the admin. Duhhh

However, when I go to create my sitemap in Step 1: I receive this error:

ERROR: Google Product Sitemap Generation FAILED!
ERROR: Google Category Sitemap Generation FAILED!
ERROR: Google Sitemap Index Generation FAILED!

Damn, I'm making every step of the way as difficult as possible, it seems!!

Any suggestions?

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

From Google I receive this error:

Empty Sitemap Your Sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap.

As stated above, on this end, when I go to create my sitemap in Admin/Tools/Google XML Sitemap: I receive this error:

ERROR: Google Product Sitemap Generation FAILED!
ERROR: Google Category Sitemap Generation FAILED!
ERROR: Google Sitemap Index Generation FAILED!

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

I would upload the entire sitemap contrib again. Since the initial file was misplaced, I suspect the others weren't installed in the proper directory.

If error messages occur, change permissions on the XML files to 777;

I did this that, with the same results. unfortunately, there may be other factors at work. The quote below is from another thread concerning changing permissions, since mine keep reverting back after I make changes:

Ajeh:

Changing permissions is based on what your hosting site has allowed on your website settings ...

If they do not allow you to use 777 then you are doomed ...

You can use all of the FTP programs you want, and FlashFXP is wonderful btw, but you will never get the change to stay ...

See if you can do it through your Control Panel for your site ...

If not, contact your hosting site and find out why you do not have control over the domain that you are paying them for ...

NOTE: perhaps a chat with one of our Certified Hosting sites would be a nice idea ... see link at top of your screen ...

It looks like my next step is a chat with my host site...

Good idea.

In the meantime have you tried logging into the Google Sitemaps account and uploading your Google Sitemap via their web page? Of course that means manually creating your Google Sitemap first, if you cannot set any directories on server to be writable by the web server (which is quite strange that you cannot).

Have you tried setting chmod directory permissions thru cpanel or other vhost account software?

Hi Woodymon - Thanks for responding. When I tried uploading via the Google Sitemaps webpage I received this error:

Empty Sitemap - Your Sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap.
Which speaks to your second point about manually creating the sitemap first. However, I have no idea how to go about doing that. (Which is why I was so excited about the GoogleSitemapAdmin Mod in the first place)

*

I've posted the response I received from my hosting service below:

The machine you are on is not Unix, so I believe that the CHMOD command does not work. In any case, you should not be installing Zen cart modules without checking with us -- This can cause issues not only for you, but for everyone else on the server. Which module do you want? Send me the info and I'll check it with the programming staff and get back to you.
It looks like it might be a good time to migrate, which is something I've been considering recently, anyway, since I've found that my host company is more expensive then others.

However, I'd like to get this mod in place, if possible. You mentioned setting chmod directory permissions thru cpanel or other vhost account software. Could you expound on what this entails? What is cpanel?

Thanks again.

Re: Google SitemapAdmin

Hi Tim,

C-Panel is a server side client control panel, it works like the control panel in windows works,
it controls everything you can do in your account.

Here is a set of tutorials on some of the things that can be done in c-panel.
