Newbie problems with main page

How can I get rid of the categories that appear on top of the page.
How do I add to the main page "Featured item" or any other staff.
How can I get rid of the entire right column

What an ironic set of icons. A Zen arch over Glock pistols. Perhaps it belongs in the dictionary next to mixed metaphors.
