Different shipping for one item

My Zen Cart is abookstore, and the client charges $2.00 for handling on books. But there is also one product, a paper gift certificate, where the client does not want to charge that handling fee.

The client also offers free shipping, so I can't just deduct $2 from the selling price...

Any thoughts?

Re: Different shipping for one item

Have you tried setting the Always Free Shipping option on the product in Admin / Catalog / Products & Categories?

Free shipping is only one option...the client also offers customers the option of having it sent via Express Mail, which they want to charge for.

I wonder if I could use the tare weights...hmmm, going to give that a try...

Nope, tare weights can't do it, both the books and the certificate would be considered small-medium packages...

Is shipping by price or weight?

Re: Different shipping for one item

Unless you're going to dispense with the handling charge and instead add it to each of the weight / price range figures, then don't know if this works for you but I tried an experiment using table rate and setting a negative weight of -2 for the gift voucher.

I then set the table weight range using a minus value equivalent to the handling charge which then removed it. eg 1:-2.00. Or, you could set the minus value to adjust the handling charge to the amount you actually want to charge for the postage. Stays the same regardless of quantity although I imagine this isn't an issue with this particular product. If other products are bought (assuming a weight value is set) then the normal handling charge is applied.

Tried various other values but it wouldn't work so don't know what determines these figures or if these values would work for you. It's a bit of a fudge and might look a bit odd if you show the weights in the cart but seems on the face of it to work.

Might be a way to use attributes otherwise...maybe some of the clever bunch around here might have another suggestion.

Re: Different shipping for one item

Thanks for your response, patski. I haven't experimented with table rates, so I will explore that a bit more...

What might be the easiest workaround for now is to not offer special delivery for paper gift certificates (I think Amazon has this limitation also)...sort of like what Ticketmaster does with "will call" tickets purchased within a few weeks of a show...so, to work like this, I could:

  • Make shipping free for paper gift certificates
  • Add $2.00 to the base price and add a note that the price includes shipping

Of course, I have to convince my boss to go this way...she hates it whenever I say "but Amazon doesn't even do that!"...
