How to tell that someone is hacking your site?

How can you tell that someone is hacking your site? Apart from changes to your website, what other clues are there? Can they make your site slow, crash etc?

Read your server logs. Look for unusual activity, strange requests etc.

Where do i look for that? I do not have a server and what type of unusual services/requests?
