Just need some straight anwers

I have successfully made a custom template. I figured I did my over-rides correctly, but I can't change the stupid 'Welcome to...' or the 'Welcome guest'.

  1. I've tried to change the index.php in includes/languages/my_template but nothing happens.
  2. I've also changed the index.php in the includes/languages/english and nothing happens
  3. I've tried changing the index.php in the includes/languages/english/my_template

Am I supposed to have the index in all of these places? Sounds really silly. If so why do none of them change?

Re: Just need some straight anwers

Admin> Configuration> Layout Settings>
Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page

Did you try a search for "welcome guest"?

Best Wishes

Re: Just need some straight anwers

There shouldn't be an index.php file in incudes/languages/your_template/ - there should only be primary language files in there such as english.php, spanish.php etc.

Your override file should be includes/languages/english/your_template/index.php, and the defines you should be changing are TEXT_GREETING_GUEST and/or TEXT_GREETING_PERSONAL

Re: Just need some straight anwers

I am fairly certain I am correct for 2 reasons.

  1. I just looked at Admin> Configuration> Layout Settings>

Edit the line for -- Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page - set to 0= off

  1. I copied the answer from Kim here - http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35919&highlight=guest

Could still be wrong though but I don't think so.

I don't believe it!!!
I mean I can't believe I have missed this for so long!!

I have been editing & overriding the appropriate file to remove this.
How could I miss this, I have been through every menu & option many times to make sure I understood all the options available and still I missed this simple switch.
Going to the code I can now see that there is a switch around the code to toggle this display.
Thank god for the forums (sorry sermonzone). I still learn something new each time I log on.

Update!! this is a new 1.30 option, it wasn't available in 1.2. I don't feel so bad now. I didn't think that anything had altered much in the admin side in 1.3 only the catalog side. Must go through all the options in the admin again and see if there are other cool things they have hidden in there without telling.

Re: Just need some straight anwers

Thanks guys for the quick responses. Yes, I've looked through the forums and found all the usual info about admin/tools/search, edit the index.php, etc. BUT, I've edited the index.php to death and get nothing.

BUNYIP, thanks for the info, so you're saying that I should have two index.php's?

  1. over-ride index.php located at languages/english/your_template/index.php
  2. the main index.php located at languages/english/index.php

I've changed the welcome message on both of the above index.php files but no matter what the website will always show the same "welcome to..." message.

Any ideas?

If I can't figure this out, I guess I'll simply go into the admin and turn off the message entirely.

Re: Just need some straight anwers

Sorry, didn't realize that you wanted to edit these messages, most want to turn them off.

copy includes/languages/english/index.php
to includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE/index.php and edit this index.php only.

If you have already done this, clear your browser cache

Re: Just need some straight anwers

To turn off the message " Welcome guest" you DO NOT edit the index.php file.

You go to Admin> Configuration> Layout Settings> then select Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page. You will find this line about half way down - line 24 or so. Change this from true (1) to false (0).

I suppose you could hack the code somewhere but why not do it the easy way and just turn it off using the admin?

EDIT - this applies to ver 1.3+

Re: Just need some straight anwers

Sermonzone: The Admin Edit you mentioned only turns off the "Welcome Guest. Would you like to Log In?", but not the "Welcome to.." message. Any thoughts?

Gilby: If most users turn this off, how do customers log in? Did you turn it off and add it somewhere else on the page?

Thanks guys

If most users turn this off, how do customers log in? Did you turn it off and add it somewhere else on the page?

The header navbar by default shows Home and Login links. Anyone who wants can find it in a standard location, and I dislike telling new shoppers to login before they even know they want to spend time at my site. If they need to be logged in, they will be prompted to do so at the appropriate time.
