Serious Delay Loading Pages

Hi,

I have a serious perfomance problem with zencart. I have only about 10 items in the catalog. But, for some reason there is rougly an 8 second delay when clicking on links in the store. I've turned off category counts as suggested in other threads but it didn't help. This lag time happens on all pages, even the home page, checkout process pages, etc.

I have three osCommerce stores on this same server (with only a few items in the catalog in each store) and they each run fast, no delays in loading pages. But not zencart -- it has noticeable lag time between page loads.

Any ideas why this happens? Any suggestions for performance tuning? Any way to find out what the delay is caused by? Maybe some indexes I can add to the database, config settings to adjust, code to modify?

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

If this only happens on FIRST hit to your site ... and then you run fast ... this is because your hosting site has not set up your server for a faster analysis of the gethostbyaddr translation of the IP Address ...

This is mainly for the Who's Online in the admin to see who is who in the zoo ...

You can either ask your host to fix this issue ... or turn it off in the Configuration ... Session ... settings ...

P to Host Conversion Status
Convert IP Address to Host Address

Note: on some servers this can slow down the initial start of a session or execution of Emails

It happens on every page.

"IP to Host Conversion Status" is turned off already. So that's not the problem. It must be something else.

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Here's what I see: If I click on an item it takes 8 to 10 seconds before the page begins to load. Then if I immediately click on another item it'll load within 2 to 3 seconds. But, if I wait for about 30 seconds THEN click another item, it goes back to taking 8 to 10 seconds to load. That's odd.

Be a lot easier to touch the site and tell you what's wrong than to guess all night ... :smile:

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Having played on the site ...

You have nothing to account for this dog site ... other than possible server issues ...

I have never seen a site with 4000+ products, 1600+ categories and 40,000+ attributes run that slow ... and you only have 9 products ... :eek:

Check with your hosting site about perhaps a less overloaded server ... or check into our Certified Hosting sites ... :smile:

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

I'm having the same issue with mine. If you would like to take a poke around the site it is located at:

http://bestpopupdisplays.com/

Getting closer to opening this site, so any input would be great. I'll bug my hosting company also. Did not have this issue with another store on the same server. (Also get random errors from the site on one computer here, reload the page and all is fine..)

Thanks!

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Might do a search on Dreamhost for a number of threads on the experiences with this hosting site ... see if they can put you on a less populated or faster server ...

Then you might wish to take a peek at our Certified Hosting sites for a better experience ...

While your images are rather large ... that does not explain the slowness of your site ...

Turning on GZip would help to some extent to speed things up ...

Configuration ... GZip ...

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Ajeh,

Thanks for the fast response! I have found the Dreamhost threads.. Bummer.

I turned on GZip and turned off "upcoming products" and some other little tid bits I found in threads here. It probably loads about 1 second faster on product pages, but still 6 seconds too long.

Thanks again!

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Nothing in your shop accounts for 6 seconds ...

NOTE: a site that has not been touched ... as in no one has visited it for XXX amount of time, this is server dependant, does have MySQL queries that are not "stored" or preloaded by other users and there could be a delay ...

What this means is ...

Let's say I come to see your site today and am 1st in the door ...

I hit the All Products link ... and say this takes 6 seconds ...

I then click Page 2 of All Products ... and let's say this is 6 seconds ...

I then click Page 3 of All Products ... and let's say this is 6 seconds ...

Now I click back to page 2 ... and it takes 0.2 seconds ...

This is cached queries are not helping make the site fast ... some sites use this ... some do not ... others have it set very low ...

Now if each page regardless of going:

All Products Link
Page 2
Page 3
Page 2
Page 3

are always the same slow time ... then you have a dog of a server as your hosting site is not even attempting to optimize things for MySQL ... or the settings are too low and you need to talk to your hosting site and get them raised ...

Active sites have the advantage of more things are cached in the MySQL to keep things running fast ...

I am not a server type ... just talk to my hosting guru to understand how it is his servers are so fast and become faster with each click ... and the next guy in gets the fast queries that I made by looking around the site ...

Hope this might help too ...

Bark bark..

Yep, I'm thinking of breeding it and getting some puppies.

Surprise, surprise, mo response yet from Dreamhost. I checked our account and we still have 6 months pre-paid there.. I thought we had longer, so not as bad of a hit. Looking close at one of the Zencart hosting companies.

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

I do not think this slow page loading is a dog of a server issue, i think its got something more to do with the attributes sql code

I have a test site online here

http://www.specsellers.com/spec2/index.php

and for most all pages the page load is sub 1 sec, all products lists , category listings etc etc

yet

the product page, stalls at the attribute loading and takes about 15 secs..

i set the page load time and quiries run to show at the bottom of the page, and its showing sub 1 secs for most all pages and 200 or so qeiries..

yet the product page takes 15 secs with 11000+ queries..

now i know there are a lot of options, but thats because of the specifics of the lenses in the orders

why does the system make 11000 queries?

i have 1 option with 180 items in the dropdown, two others with 50 in the dropdown, and two with 20 in the drop down, but this shouldnt be 11000 queries.

something isnt right and i would say its the attributes sql code..

ok,

why can i rule out my mysql, well the same apache/php/mysql combination server 45 other sites and none have issues, one of the sites does full text searches in multiple ways through 560,000 records in a 258mb mysql database, and it runs no hassle, i have postnuke site, phpnuke, joomla and wiki's and all run sub 1 sec pages, yet my only zencart runs cool untill the product page

anyone any idea's

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

StevenD ...

With the 400+ attributes per product this will take some time to load ...

In the next couple of upcoming releases this should help you quite a bit ...

I would be interested in a copy of your database to work on further optimizations as your site definitely pushes the limits and would be of great help in testing the new versions before release ...

If that works for you ... please drop me a PM ... thanks! :smile:

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

NOTE: you have a nice fast hosting site ... many cannot manage 80-100 attributes in 15 seconds let alone down to 2 seconds or less ... where a good server should be at ...

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Linda, I sent you a priv message

you know what would be really cool, if there was an option in the option types for html or code

where we can now choose, radio, text, dropdown..

there should eb a code/html custom option

then i could choose that, for the size range

and in the custom code add

<?php
$i = "-60";
while ($i <= 60):
   echo "<option value=$i>$i</option>";
   $i++;
endwhile;
?>

and then my options would show the +60 to -60 dropdown, without even having to add all the damn attribute options one by one in the firstplace, and it would also allow for a single sql to get that code statement rather than hundreds for all the options one at a time.

or even of it allowed a custom array to be typed in and then displayed through the same place

you could choose 'array' instead of text, radio, dropdown

and then just type an array of dropdown choices into the attribute section where it asks for rows, etc

1,2,3,4,5,6

or

Blue. Red. Green, Black

whatever

it would speed up the adding of certain attribute/option types, and cut down on sql calls

Re: Serious Delay Loading Pages

Since I see some people linking to my site from this thread, I should point out that I switched hosting over to one of the Zen Certified companies, so it is nice and speedy now. Also offers more features then dreamhost.

I was happy at Dreamhost until this issue came up, now I'm even happier. :)
