howto show always Top and Subcategories in the category box?

How do I make the Subcategories always show on the main page without having to click on the main category for them to show?

Such as:

Main Category ->
|_Subcategory
|_Subcategory
|_Subcategory
Main Category ->
|_Subcategory
|_Subcategory
|_Subcategory
|_Subcategory

i found some threads in the archive section which will discuss this issue, but all will refer to other threads via links which are broken. the broken links may be a result of the forum migration.
