center box alligment different in IE and firefox

Hi!

I have tried and tried to sort this out but can't seem to get my head around it.

After customising the CSS (using the classic templates because I didn't know any better until after!) I have everything looking ok except that the centre box doesn't display right in firefox. It looks as though it is is either not wide enough or not alligned properly? It looks fine in in IE.

any ideas would be most appreciated!

thanks

Kate

I am not much of a coder but I do see that you are using the combination of the old & new css or original & new. Not sure of why there is a difference in IE vs FF. Someone else might be able to trace this problem.

I did observe a couple of other items that if you expect shoppers to stay long enough to actually see and purchase your items, you should address.

  1. Optimize you image sizes; Your thumbnails are in the range of 100k each and this is severly slowing down loading of your site to a crawl. Thumbnails are typically 1.5 to 5k each and due to the small size, do not suffer appreciably in visual quality.

A shopper can see the item and if interested can decide to view a larger image that can be of higher quality. Because they are interested, they will be more inclined to wait for the image to load.

  1. I suspect that your host is also causing a part of the slow loading and you might consider another host dedicated to ecommerce. This will be to your benefit as shoppers typically do not desire to wait and will shop elsewhere.

Re: center box alligment different in IE and firefox

I am actualy having the same problem with my site. http://www.tooltowntools.com . Im using the old/new CSS files, bascialy just overwriting the Classic template. I did a reinstall of zencart on my server (im hosting it on my own linux box) to clean up the server and update it from 1.2.7. It looks fine in IE but not firefox... It aligns all the way to the right in firefox. I spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to get it to align center before i even thought that it might be my browswer. Anyone else having this problem and/or know how to fix it? Thanks

Nevermind, fixed it :)

All you have to do is make sure the width of your page is set in all 3 stylesheets. Stylesheet.css , Stylesheet_new.css, and stylesheet_original.css . Make sure there all the same width set.

If you are working from the Classic template, stylesheet.css is irrelevant as it will never be applied to your page.

Re: center box alligment different in IE and firefox

It has taken a while for me to get back to this as we have had a host change due to several issues but thanks all for your help...

I actually figured out my problem just tonight... and it was totally simple and staring me in the face, can't figure out how I missed it in the first place! A simple case of not setting the width of the 'mainwrapper' section to the correct size! Very simple!

kobra - thank you so much for your great input... I finally listened and got myself a new host! I am interested in the thumbnail optimisation though... can you tell a total newbie how you'd set up to use a smaller sized file for the small thumbnail and then the large one for the larger view?

As you can tell from my stumbling language I am very new at all this, but learning heaps!

thanks

Re: center box alligment different in IE and firefox

Do you have Photoshop or any photo/image editing software? If so, edit your picture to look as you want it and make it the pixel dimensions you want for the large image (keep the original saved somewhere in case you mess up.) Save it, using "Optimize for Web" if you have that option.

Then copy the picture and reduce it to the thumbnail pixel dimensions (optimize again.)

Give the thumbnail the name you want to use for the product image (abc.jpg); give the large image the same name with _LRG added (abc_LRG.jpg). The LRG must be uppercase.

Load the thumbnail into the product in the usual way. Then load the large image; it should go into /images/large/. I'm not sure of the best way to do this because all my original images were loaded using the Image Handler module, which automatically does all of the resizing for you. The new Image Handler 2 in the downloads would probably make your life quite a bit easier. I suggest you get it and try it out. Good luck!

katef,

Ditto on the other posts about the image handling issue. Thanks Clyde for the link to ryk's primer.

If you don't have PS or another that will do this there is freeware that can assist you might like Easythumbnail by fookes: http://ezthumbs

I hope that you find Zen Bliss with your new host...

Re: center box alligment different in IE and firefox

mattlowe01,

If I were you I would scrap the classic based template and develop one around the template_default file set. If you like the classic look there are a few variations of this setup on the template_default in the downloads section or the FutureZen template for a different clean look.

Or you can start with the template default css and create your own.

There will be continuing problems with the cross of style sheets in the setup you are using as this was never intended as a base for a new site.
