Making Attributes Manditory?

Hi there i'm using version 1.2.6 (i believe)

Basically i have set the price of a product to zero and then set the atributes up as base prices i.e. not adding to a product price. The problem is if they do not select an attribute the customer only gets charged for the shipping. So my question is is ther any way to make the attributes manditory, so that the customer cannot add to cart without slecting an attribute.

Regards

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

In the attributes controller there is a selection for "Default Attribute
to be Marked Selected:" that would pre-select what you define as default.

If that will do what you want???

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

The other addition to this is the Display Only Attribute ...

A Display Only Attribute is used when you have many choices on an Attribute such as ...

Option Name: Size
Option Values: Small, Medium, Large, XX-Large

You do not want someone to "accidentally" order a Small ...

So you can make a Display Only Attribute and you might make it a dropdown which reads:

Option Name: Size
Option Values:

Select from below ... (make it read whatever and set as Default, Display Only, Sort Order 0)
XX-Small Sort Order 10
Small Sort Order 20
Medium Sort Order 30
Large Sort Order 40
XX-Large Sort Order 50

Now if they try to add this to the cart, because it is marked Default and Display Only they will receive an error to make a proper selection ...

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

G'day,

That solution works fine for making attributes of type 'Dropdown' manditory, but it doesn't work for those of type 'Radio'.

The "please select one' options is displayed with a radio button option, and if nothing is selected, it still gets added to the shopping cart.

How is it done for radio buttons?

Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

Works on everything except checkboxes ... and TEXT has a required setting ...

Color:
() Pick a color below (default, display only, sort order 0)
() Red (sort order 10)
() Green (sort order 20)
() Yellow (sort order 30)

If the Pick a color below is marked and you hit add to cart you are told no way ...

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

Ok thanks ajeh thats solves the problem one way but......isn't there always a but.

I have 2 name options for 1 artwork that can be printed onto canvas and a 2rtwaork that can be downloaded on the same peice of artwork these then have various value options is there anyway round this beacsue i assume if you set both dropdown boxes as you mentioned above even if you had selected an option in one drop down box and not the other it would still kick up an error?

Thanks for your advice on this.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

You might need to set those up as two separate products, canvas and digital, with their respective attributes.
There is a cross-sell mod that you could use to link the two products so when one is open the other shows as a recommended alternate.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

If I got this correct you might also be able to set different attribute names with values for the different types of products.

This would normally be used for things like size & color but might be able to combine into something like:

original
Print
download

Where the attribute name is 'type' (or another title you like better) and the attribute values are the original, print, & download.

You might experiment with this.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

This would work fine, but has the drawback of either not being able to require a sub-selection relevant to the chosen type, or requiring sub-selections for both types, even the one not chosen.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

I have a slightly similar problem.

My client is offering purchased in specified quantities, 10 packs, 50 packs, 100 packs etc so they have attributes for each product, around 5 per product.

The client needs to be able to select multiples from these attriburts to make up the number they want to order.

Eg. Select 200 packs + 50 packs to order 250 packs.

Because of this they are setup as checkboxes, since nothing else would allow this, however, if the client just hits add to cart then it add the product, no value to it nor any numebr of items are added.

This is of course not a good thing, however by the same token I do not want to set a default to it either, more because they have 100s of products and it would take an age to do.

Can anyone help me work out how to simply dissable the add to cart button from working properly until a selection has been made, but still have the button clickable with a popup window telling them they need to make a selection.

Many thanks

My only addon is Gallery addon and can be seen here breezy

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

Would there be a way to make a text option madatory? So if you require a certain text field to be filled in, they couldn't add to cart unless it was?

Attribute Required for Text:
No Yes

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

Thanks, Ajeh, but it's not working for us.

We have a 1.3.8a cart and when we require the text attribute via the attribute controller, it has no effect whatsoever.

Example:
http://designmycart.com/1-column-bisi-store-template-blue-striped-business-p-79.html

The "Store URL (Required)" field. You can leave it empty and still add to cart.

We do have the mod "Improved Attributes Controller" installed, would that make any difference? The radio button to make text required is still there and it's checked.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

Thanks Glen, but there doesn't appear to be a specific support thread for the Improved Attributes Controller after doing a search here. There isn't one listed with the add-on description on the download page either.

The only thing that mod was meant to do was improve the way the attribute choices are displayed in the admin dropdown boxes on the attribute controller page:

"This module changes the way the dropdown select fields work on the Attributes Controller Page. The content of the second dropdown (option values) is now dependant upon the content of the first dropdown (option names), so you will only see values that apply to the selected option name. Javascript is used to avoid having the page reload when you make that selection in the first box. "

So I can't see where it would affect the radio button for making text madatory.

Edited to add:
I just remembered that I have that mod installed on my other cart (which is a 1.3.0.2 cart) and I just tested making text mandatory there. It worked just fine with that same mod installed.

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

I am not sure if this is related to the tabbed add on that you are using or not ...

You can try to switch to Classic Template to see if it works, if so, that would help narrow down the problem ...

Re: Making Attributes Manditory?

I tried out the classic green template temporarily and same thing. Making text required has no effect.

The fact that it works on my other cart and not on this one bugs me. Both carts have nearly all the same mods installed so I have no clue what's going on.

We've gotten along all this time without being able to require text fields, so I guess it will suffice. As you can see we dealt with it as best we can by putting "(required)" after the option name, but some folks continue to ignore that. It would just be nice if it actually worked.

And I hate not being able to figure stuff out. :shocking:
