Product categories displayed on main page?

Hi,

I want to set my cart up in a layout that has limited space width wise. Due to this I don't want either of the left or right hand side boxes displayed at all.. so I've shut them off in the admin.

My issue is that I now want to just have the product categories displayed in a rows on the main page of my store. So it would be something like this:

      X          X          X
   cat 1      cat 2       cat 3


      X          X          X
   cat 4      cat 5       cat 6

... where X is an image pertaining to that category, and cat X is a link into the category (to show the products). I also want to get rid of the products that are displaying there by default in the "New for" sections or whatever.

I've taken a look through the admin and the template files, but I just can't seem to find where I would start to make this sort of change.

Anyone have any advice for me??>

I've disabled the style sheets for the moment, as I'm still in the middle of getting the cart contents to fit within my layout.

In the Configuration ... Layout Settings ... there are 2 settings for:

Categories - Always Show on Main Page
Always Show Categories on Main Page
0= off
1= on
Default category can be set to Top Level or a Specific Top Level

And then the actual categories_id to start with:

Main Page - Opens with Category
0= Top Level Categories
Or enter the Category ID#
Note: Sub Categories can also be used Example: 3_10

See if that doesn't help you get the main page of your site to begin with the Top Level Categories ...

Do you happen to know how to hide the "New Products for" boxes?

Assuming that you mean in the center column ...

Admin > Configuration > Index Listing

there you will find references to four situations where the new products boxes may be displayed, setting any or all of them to 0 will suppress their display.
