Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

Can anyone tell me what to change to limit the words in the rewrite filename?
My URLS are showing up like this:
http://www.lfmbooks.com/store/jacobsen-charles-w-kitney-bruce-e-oriental-rugs-an-updated-guide-revised-2nd-edition-p-3343.html
which is fine except that search engines like shorter URLS.
How can I shorten this
jacobsen-charles-w-kitney-bruce-e-oriental-rugs-an-updated-guide-revised-2nd-edition-p-3343.html
to something like this
jacobsen-charles-w-kitney-bruce-e-oriental-rugs.html
with about 6 or 7 words.

the - need to be there
The easy way to make the urls shorter is to just change the title of your product ;)

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

I can't shorten the titles - It would take a long time and would make it harder for customers to find products.
I can live with the "-" but shortening the urls is something I need to do.
I am relatively sure i saw a post one time that gave instructions on how to shorten url to 5 to 7 words but I can't find it now.

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

Having looked at your site I would disagree because you have everything nicely laid out in the correct categories.
Using rewrites isnt the way around this and isnt really going to help with urls like this one....
http://www.lfmbooks.com/store/fox-dr-e-eugene-the-lily-yearbook-of-the-north-american-lily-society-inc-vols-47-1994-51-1998-52-1999-53-2000-54-2001-55-2002-56-2003-57-2004-p-5567.html

I would turn off the category counts in the admin btw as it will vastly improve your stores performance.

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

Thanks for the the nice comment about the categorization.

The only reason I am using url rewrites is because the search engines prefer static pages. I don't really care what the pages are named as long as they are less than 20 characters and they look static. If I shortened my titles I would have to remove part of the title of each book I am selling. You see, right now am using easypopulate and phpscript that I made to convert my inventory to zencart format. It is all automatic and all the titles are populated from that so it would be hard to change.

I didn't realize that category counts would affect the speed of the site. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

I figured changing "Filter Short Words" to 10 would do the trick but that works on some but not on others. Has anyone else had problems with "Filter Short Words" in the seo urls menu.

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

No that does not work.
All pages still have words smaller than 10. Even if I set this at 48 it doesn't work.
I have reset the cache several times also.

Can you explain to me how to change urls to a shorter page such as p-4002.html
instead of lepage-w-laurence-wynn-laurence-le-page-the-abc-of-flight-p-4002.html
?

Re: Shortening URLS on Ultimate URLS

Thats the whole point of this mod.
To have p-4002.html gives no benefit to you at all, you want keywords in the url.
If you want a url like that just uninstall this and use zens default code.

Apparently you misunderstand the reason why modrewrite is used for SEO purposes. It is not to put keywords in the URL. It is to make the urls look like static pages, which the search engines usually rank better and have less trouble indexing. Google and Yahoo do not put any value on having the keywords in the page name. MSN does put some value on it but not enough to make much of a difference.

If I have the URLS rewritten into page names such as this,
lepage-w-laurence-wynn-laurence-le-page-the-abc-of-flight-p-4002.html
then Google will probably ban those pages and maybe my whole site because a page with so many dashes is probably spam and Goggle sees it that way.

If someone could answer my question, that would be nice.

I am aware why mod rewrites are used to create static pages thanks, and the answer to your problem is already in this thread but you choose to ignore it.

I assume that you mean shortening my titles. That is not possible. A title of a book is a title and can't be shorten, neither can the author. Besides that it is not the easiest way. I will probably have to spend a couple hours figuring this out but if I shortened the titles it would take 20 hours maybe 40 hours to do it. Certainly not easier.
