Discounts on Gift Certificate

I am in the process of checking out my store and making sure that everything work correct. But I seem to be having a problem with a discount for Gift Certificate

1. I have setup Gift Certificate and they seem to be working correct.

2. I have set up a discount name GC-1 which applies to my Gift Certificate Category. In the Discount Coupons Product/Category Restrictions section I have allow Gift Certificate and restricted the rest of the category. I have even tried allowing the Product itself. But it doesn't seem to work.

3. What I get when I check out is the following "This coupon code is not valid for any product currently in your cart.". Hence I cann't apply the discount.

I not sure why it doesn't work?
You can't apply a discount to Gift Certificate?

Can anyone give me a clue on where to look or what I am doing wrong?

umm ... nope ... cannot discount Gift Certificates ... they'd steal you blind ... :eek:

We will not allow you to use Zen Cart to send yourself to the poor house and pay people to take your stuff ... :cool:

I am too trying to do this.. yes 1 yr later, but searched the forums for it. I understand the concept of not being able to redeem a GC for more reduced price GC's hence 'running us dry'

But, there should be some way around this. We should be able to sell them at reduced rates, to be able to be redeemed at full face value later. How about Restricting the subsequent purchase to any NON-GC products? Isn't as simple as "Cant use a GC for another GC (regardless of whether the new GC is reduced or not.) Am I missing something? Why isn't this worked around? This seems basic logic and should be made availabe in the system.

I have to tell my client that he cannot put a sale on GC's... he's going to be scratching his head too... as he's been discounting them out of the store (His physical storefront) for a long time now.

Similarly (though not identically), I'm trying to use a coupon to offer free movie tickets to any customer who buys a gift certificate of $75 or more. I've got a value of 0.00 and a min purchase value of 75.00, but because gift certificates aren't viewed as "real" products, Zen-Cart won't allow the discount. Is there any way around this? I have a very eager client here.
