change "your shopping cart is empty" page

When I click on my view cart link and there is nothing in the cart it goes to a page that says

"Your shopping cart is empty."

"New products for July"

then it lists all my products

I do not want any of these products displayed at all. Ideally I just want it to say "your shopping cart is empty" and have nothing else on the page except for the header.

Any ideas?

To remove this from just this page you will need to find the code that generates this page. Try using the developers tools in your admin > tools area and searching the catalog files for ...Your shopping cart is empty

You will find that this is in this file:includes/languages/english/shopping_cart.php

You can then determine what calls the new products page and try commenting it out.

I've actually commented out a whole smattering of code with regard to new products, but to no avail.

All that is needed is to edit the template for the shopping cart when empty ...

Copy this to your overrides directory:
/includes/templates/templates_default/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php

Comment out the area at the bottom:

Later if you ever need it back you can just remove the comments ...
