Slow Site

I'm having problems with my site loading, ie: it's slow. Maybe it's just me, but I've tried to access it from work (which is on a T-something-big) and at home (which is 768 DSL) and both times it takes about twenty seconds to load.

I've already enabled GZip, and turned off category counts for admin and catalog.

Is there anything else I can do to speed up my site? I don't have any items or images yet (else I would be using Image Handler2), save for the one large logo and several small credit card logos.

I also use one image for the background (that wood pattern) and it's only one file referenced a bunch of times.

See if it loads slow for you: Click Here

If it doesn't look like there's anything wrong, I might go and talk to my hosting company. Given, the other website I run through them doesn't lag, but it also is almost straight HTML with little or no interesting PHP bits on it.

Much thanks in advance!

Re: Slow Site

It takes, for me, about 2.5 secs to load each pages (humanly counted of course). If you need more detailed statistics, you can always try to test your web site's speed from: http://www.websiteoptimization.com .

This will show all the results you need regarding the loading speed and even some recommendations in order to speed up your site (down below - that site). :wink2:

Re: Slow Site

I was looking through other threads and noticed that website a few other times.

Maybe it's my connection.

Either way, I'm in the red when it comes to CSS. I'm using the two-template version of the 1.3 classic program. If I were to use the winmerge program, would that take out the duplicate stuff and condense the file?

Thank you again for your input!

If this is about duplication, then Winmerge or Beyond Compare 2 are the best tools to compare your readings from two same file with different codings. :wink2:

Re: Slow Site

Hm... it's still loading slow.

I guess it must be me.

Is there another template that looks similar to Classic? The more basic the better...

Re: Slow Site

I think I've found one of the problems: I need to optimize my logo, which is one big-arse file. Also, the "wood" file I'm using for a background might be a bit tight. If I were to shorten that (it's only about 100 px to a side and I chose it because it's a seamless tile) do you think that would speed up the site?

Also, there is a verson of Classic that includes only one style sheet. Would that help?

Always try to keep the smallest kb size of your products (as well as your header logo). This will definitely speed up the load-time of your site. The more it weights, the longer it will take to load as you'd only require more server ressources. :wink2:

Re: Slow Site

The screwballish part is: Even with the default template (literally template_default) it still took a good thirty seconds to load.

Re: Slow Site

Please post your URL pointing to your techsupp.php file (you will find this file from your zc_install folder under the latest Zen-Cart package you have downloaded from sourceforge.net). I will take a look at it.

Re: Slow Site

I actually used what's called a "One-Click Install" from my host (dreamhost.com) and it turns out they have 1.3.1... while sourceforge says 1.3.2

Lemmie install 1.3.2 and see if it solves the problem.

Re: Slow Site

Two problems:

PHP Register Globals = ON
PHP session.use_trans_sid = ON

These two should be set to OFF rather than ON. They can be switchable by taking your admin/.htaccess file and use the Register globals (OFF) and session_use_trans_sid (OFF). Once ajusted, you can upload it to your root folder of Zen-Cart. (Note: Make a backup of the file before making modifications on it).

Additional note: It wasn't necessary to upload your whole zc_install folder but simply your techsupp.php file would of suffice. :wink2:

Re: Slow Site

I set this up through my host company (dreamhost.com) in something they have called "One-Click Installs"... which means I don't do anything but run the install. This was a copy I downloaded direct from sourgeforge.net and installed myself.

Lemmie alter it and run the install. Can I just alter the file through wordpad or something else? I haven't configured my site for htaccess and I don't want to risk screwing something else.

Notepad or any PHP editor would be highly recommended for any file editing you wish to make in order to keep the file's structure integrity to maintain the file as flexible as possible when you wish to send these kinds of files through FTP / cPanel.

Otherwise, you might alter the file.

I'm at a loss. How do I turn these two things off?

Re: Slow Site

Disregard the admin/.htaccess file.

Instead, create a new .htaccess file and paste the following content in:

#<IfModule mod_php4.c>
# php_value session.use_trans_sid 0
# php_value register_globals 0
#</IfModule>

Then, upload to your root folder of Zen-Cart. This should do it. :wink2:

Re: Slow Site

I would suggest a search for DreamHost ... there seem to be issues with them.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Re: Slow Site

They were having hardware problems and I think that when they fixed the hardware they fixed everything. I'm in the process of registering a domain name with them, but I still have my demo store here:

http//www.lucajo.com

Can anyone check it and see if it's still slow? It takes less than a second to load on my end and I'm on DSL.

Re: Slow Site

Less than a second should have been several seconds, and I think I've found the delay:

When the site loads the database / scripts take a bit to wind up, which is causing the three-to-five-second hitch while the page loads.

Otherwise navigation is fine.
