Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Hi Everyone,

I have just discovered where and how to set permissions, up until today it went totally over my head, but I have read a few good threads, and kind of worked it out, but am not sure if I have just made a boo boo or whether I have done it right.

I was reading the thread and it said this

In cPanel, you have File Manager.

Open File Manager, and browse to the folder where you have put your Zen Cart files, and make the changes to particular files/folders as needed.

Example: /includes/languages/english/html_includes

Browse down through

  • includes
  • languages
  • english
  • html_includes

Click on html_includes.

Then you'll get another page, and likely in the top right corner there will be a "folder permissions" or "permissions" link. Click on that.
Then set the permissions to read, write, and execute for ALL categories of users (usually 9 checkboxes). If it has an option to process all files under this subdirectory, check that box. Then click OK (or whatever button to process the changes).

So I went to my CP, clicked on the html_includes file, but I set the permissions for the whole html_includes folder I think, and got the following message
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/angel_in_disguize_247/zenchmodmessage.jpg

I just wanted to confirm that I wanted to set the permissions for the whole html_includes file.

Fingers crossed I have done it right.

Thanks (yet again)
Kind Regards
Nikki

P.S I edited them in crimson editor beforehand

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

It appears to be correct - try the define pages eiditor - if it tells you it can't write to a page then it didn't work.

Hope thaat helps

It's good to ask. Following to what TinaS said, above, you can always find the answers from your docs's installation instructions on how to set the CHMOD permissions properly to make sure that all folders are being ajusted correctly.

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Thank you both,

My host set up zencart basics for me, so I didnt get any installation instructions :shocking: probably why I didnt have a clue what was going on

I will go and check the define pages editor now, but thinking about it, I could edit those before, so hopefully I still can. Ohhh zencart is such fun, good job I love to learn.

Take Care
Nikki

You may wish to do a download of the current Full Zen Cart v1.3.0.2 so that you have a clean copy of all files ...

Plus, you should maintain a full copy of your site offline on your computer ... in addition to consistant backups of your database ...

Very well. Just make sure that your host has installed the latest version of Zen-Cart (which is: v1.3.0.2) and you'll be all set once all the folders will be set correctly.

In the mean time, if you have no clue how the permission works, over Zen-Cart, you can always download a copy yourself from sourceforge.net and go to your docs folder to gather more information on how to proceed by the letter. :wink2:

Note: No need to re-upload any files. Simply jump into your docs folder is enough.

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Well, the good news is that I can edit pages in define page editor.

The bad news is that I am a numpty  prior to this thread I had asked how to put a link on a product page for a pdf file, and was given the instructions to change the permissions to either 755 or 744, but the tutorial I was following was to set the files to 777, so I have changed them to 777, but now need to go back and change them to either 744 or 755

Thank you all
Kind Regards
Nikki

If so, make sure you make the changes from your cPanel access account and not from your FTP access, since - under FTP - you have more limitations than cPanel for an unknown reason.

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Thanks Oracle,

I am on version 3.01, I did email them the other day to see if they will upgrade it for me, as I have read some horror stories of people upgrading and some terrible things happen. I could not handle mucking it up..lol..

So hopefully they will upgrade it soon, thanks for letting me know where I can get the instructions, that will be super..lol.. pity they didnt let me have the instructions to start off with, I would not have asked so many silly questions on here..lol

You guys have taught me loads
Kind Regards

I am on version 3.01

It might be me but I don't think that time spins that fast in our universe. Zen-Cart is actually at v1.3.0.2. :P

Thanks for updating - good luck.

I am getting there slowly but surely :D

Thanks again
Nikki

Sorry ... if I have missed post 8. :shocking:

However, the answer is yes (of course - from my personal point of vue). It is far more easier to switch permissions from cPanel than FTP since no ISPs are configuring their servers in the same ways as others. Which is why, cPanel mostly begs to differ.

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Thanks Linda, I have only just noticed your post 5 (I bad) sorry

I did not dare upgrade myself, as when I searched the forum, I found a lot of people had problems, and I would hate to muck things up badly, so I have asked my host to do it, dont think they have yet though.

Just wondered, in my control panel I have a backup facility that says

Backup Your Website
This feature allows you to download your website as a zip file, you can use this feature to make a regular backup of your website in case you lose any data.

Is this how I actually back up my files, or do I have to back up the files elsewhere aswell?

Thanks again
Nikki

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Have you tried it?

Does the Zip actually contain your whole website?

Note: you also need to backup your database on a regular basis ...

There is a nice handy dandy Backup MySQL that we have written that is plug-n-play ... DrByte has put a lot into this one to make it as compatible as possible with about 95% of the sites out there ...

And I didn't even have to rough him up ... well ... not a lot ...

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

LOL @ Linda, hope you didnt ruff up DrByte too much..hehe

Bless you, thanks for that advice, I will open the zip file and double check.

I will also look for the backupmySQL plug-n-play, sounds a very good piece of software (even though I havent worked out what SQL actually is yet :shocking: )

But am off to read up about it, and download it.

Thanks again for your kind and valuble advice.

Kind Regards
Nikki

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Hi Linda

I have just downloaded it, and the instructions said
INSTALLATION: Upload all files from the "admin" folder of this ZIP as-is to your server, retaining folder structures.

Sorry for the 'dim' question, but which folder do I unzip in into, these are the choices I have got.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/angel_in_disguize_247/zencartsqlplugin.jpg

I just didnt want to unzip it into the wrong place.

Thanks again
Nikki

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

These are my options in the zip file, do I just unzip the first /admin folder on its own,or all of the files in there.. I feel soo silly

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/angel_in_disguize_247/zencartsqlplugin2.jpg

I just want to make sure I back up my files properly..lol..

Kind Regards

Re: Could someone please confirm if I have set chmod right please

Unzip that file into an empty directory on your computer ...

You will then find a directory /admin and it will match the /admin on your site

You can then copy the /admin from the Unzipped file to the /admin on your site ...

The files will then load in their appropriate locations on the server and when done ... you will find in the Zen Cart Admin ... on the Tools ... the Backup MySQL ...
