You are posting to this old thread - Bettercategories can be installed to this template and/or Erica and I took her use of this template and we created the Lavender template that is also available and has better categories installed as part of it. Albeit is colored in shades of purple but this is alterable.
If I recall correctly XHTML Transitional is in the index.php file.
