Index.php is located in :

includes/language/english

However, you want to immediately get in the habit of using Overrides (search forum),but creating your custom templates directory in every category you'll be modifying files in. Copy the core file you will modify into there, so when you upgrade or patch, you won't lose all your changes.

so - copy /english/index.php to english/yourcustomtempltedir/index.php and make your changes (your custom dir can be named anything.)
