why does the site look bare when it's pointed to the new template?

i tried pointing to the new template i made.. and teh site looks bare compared to the classic one

Do you mean that all the side boxes are missing? If so, go to Admin ? Tools > Layout Boxes Controller and press the reset button at the bottom of the page.
