What is the _GET[sort] var?

We are running ZC ver 1.2.7

I am trying to find out what the "sort" var in the GET url is for in the catagory pages. I don't see it changing ever, and I don't see a effect if I remove it from the url.

Our SEO guys are wanting me to get rid of it if possible, and I just want to know what it is for.

The sort parameter is used to control sorting by the customer on a product-listing. If they click a column-heading, it will re-sort by that information. Removing the parameter will break that feature.
