can't get rid of a vertical box

This problem is kind of hard to describe, but after messing with it for hours with no luck, thought I would post this to see if anyone can figure this out.

The only way to show the problem is to take a look at my page at http://www.wyreworks.com

If you look behind the right column, you will see a long, thin vertical area that is the same color as the background color outside of the content area (1D1D1D), but it should be white. There is only one place in the stylesheet (stylesheet_original.css) where I set that color, so the problem must have something to do with a width being incorrect somewhere.

The rectangular area is 30px wide and my content area is 780px. I found a couple of places in the stylesheets that showed a width of 750, which I changed to 780, but it didn't fix the problem. I am at a loss as to how to make that part white like the rest of it! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

thanks

Hi, Mike! Thanks for the quick reply. I can still see on mine, though (IE7) and i did empty the cache, etc. Also installed Avant browser to see if it was some glitch with ie7, but I can see it there, too.

I've attached a screen shot of the part I'm trying to get rid of.

thanks

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

Sorry can't help with IE7 problems, I haven't download the, what is it, the rc1 (?) release yet. It looks great in IE6 and firefox 1.5.0.6

Thanks! I'll have to figure out why it would look that way on mine, then. Weird problem!

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

Like Barco said, with Firefox and MSIE6(stand-alone)... everything appears normal. Same goes for the latest MSIE 7. I had dumped all caches prior to viewing your store in each browser.

The only thing I noticed is that you are due for an upgrade. :smile:

Yeah, I thought about upgrading, but I've got so much stuff customized and so many modules added on, I'm afraid to do it! (if it ain't broke, don't fix it......)

It's all working pretty well, so I think I will hold off on the upgrade :)

(and I still see that vertical black box/line/whatever on my browser... driving me nuts that I can't figure out why it's doing it, and only on my browser!)

Alright, seeing how I can't force you into an upgrade. :no:

Just for experimentation, find in your stylesheet_new;

#navColumnTwo {
	padding: 0.5em;
	border-right: 1px solid #cccccc;
	}

Add a temporary background color declaration to that column: background-color: #ffffff;

I'm very inquisitive and I would like to know if that changes what you see.

I can't see it on a fresh IE7-beta3 install.

Wow, I really appreciate the help from everyone :) However, I tried this and I still can see the dark vertical bar. I cannot imagine what would make it look like that on mine, but no one else's. I'm not having problems viewing any other sites (that I know of). I'm attaching a larger screen shot of what I see.... it's obviously some sort of problem on my computer (although I just restored it back to factory settings/rebuilt it last week, so I don't know what could be wrong with it already). So it really bugs me that it looks wrong on mine, but at the same time glad that it looks ok on everyone else's :)

thanks again!

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

You're welcome. I'm really surprised that color declaration never worked. I don't know what else to suggest, asides from downloading a contributed template and see if the same problem exists. Maybe also go into Reviewer's Corner and have a peek at other Zen stores to see if you can duplicate what's happening to yours.

I had this awesome link for free cross-browser screenshots, but you think I could find it ever again? :no:

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

if it was displaying more consistently in other browsers or versions of IE, it would suggest that you have a header graphic too wide for the defined width of your site, and/or your sidebox columns weren't sufficient width. I've had this happen, and simply had to remember to set these settings accurately for my design. Had me really puzzled once.

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

I checked the image and it's exact width for the store. I bumped into another strange occurrence, but I don't believe it's related.

I'm trying to help another member and the strangest thing happened... The same issue with the right column came about. Although, she's having problems with double product descriptions in "Product Listings". She said the doubled product descriptions only happened after the recent upgrade and it happens with both Classic and her custom template. Also, it happens out of the blue.

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

one way in which it "might" be related is:
... in the case I was talking about, some of the page-content was pushing the width wider than the defined space, and thus the graphics and sideboxes were being pushed out (towards the right) and thus the gaps between sideboxes were showing the body BG color.

Granted, the thin-line reported in this case appears to be some sort of indicator that an area-border is defined but the content is somehow not showing the expected bg color.

It could be an extra object, as suggested, or merely a layout sizing issue. Again, since it's not reported to be reproducable elsewhere, it's really hard to say for sure ...

Just a few thoughts to add to the muddle...

Re: can't get rid of a vertical box

Just my two-pennyworth...Have you tried changing your browser text size - does it make any difference?

edited - sorry - didn't spot the url - that doesn't make any difference for me but couldn't see the problem anyway :P

another thought - you could try changing all the background-color: #ffffff in the stylesheet and see if it makes a difference.

Catching up on last-minute things here and flying out to the Michigan Ren Faire in the morning. I will work on all the suggestions when I get back and definitely will post the results!

thanks again!
