Adding images to the header and sideboxes

My question is pertaining SSL issues, I want to add some images to the header the bradcrumb and others to my categories sidebox. The images on the header and breadcrumb will not link to anything the will be there for separation. The ones on the sidebox will link to individual products or brands. My problem is that the only way I can do this is by using straight html since I'm not very familiar with php.

I'm concerned about this because I don't know if the SSL pages will issue warnings for unsecured items on the page.

Anyway, how do I add images to my pages using the php language? Or at least where could I find this information?

Thanks, now I know how to add the image, using the code below:

$title = zen_image($template->get_template_dir(BOX_HEADING_CATEGORIES,
DIR_WS_TEMPLATE, $current_page_base,'images'). '/' . BOX_HEADING_CATEGORIES,
HEADER_ALT_TEXT);

but how can I make that image link to specific brand or product?
