Adding field to products_description table

I am trying to add a field to the products_description table and have no idea how to or where to start. I am trying to do what is described at http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpost.php?p=77840&postcount=6

I figured out how to add the field to the products description table (use phpmyadmin) but my featured_products.php looks different than the one in the post I linked to above (I'm guessing because I'm using the latest version), so I can't just copy and paste the code in that post. I noticed I never really said what I'm trying to accomplish too. I'm trying to make it so the featured products on our main page (the 12 listed in the body of the page at http://www.musclewithoutsupplements.com/zencart) aren't random, and so we can set it in a specific order. We need to do this because there are certain products we want to push more than others.
