does zencart authomatically check credit card validity

So far the only way to check it is through authorize.net, is there anyway to check if the credit card is valid through simple php? I know that there is a special algorithm for checking if the credit card number is valid or not.

Just to save time is there such a function in php/zen-cart?

The supplied payment modules pre-validate the validity of the CC numbers automatically, using the standard MOD10 algorithms, as well as noting the typical numerical patterns of the more popular cards.

... and the contribs I've looked at reuse this core logic (see includes/classes/cc_validation.php).
