How do I hide the units in stock from the customers?

I like to be able to see the stock in the admin interface somehow but I don't want the customers to see it. Is this possible?
Where do I make the change to hide it from the customer?

Entering "Hide units in stock" in the search would have brought up about a dozen threads which supply the answer...

Admin > Catalog > Product Types - edit the LAYOUT for your product type

It's possible to have, instead of quantity, a simple gif to indicate stock quantity?

I suppose there's no reason why you couldn't... you'd need to find the code that displays the quantity and replace it with an image reference.

But why go to all that trouble?

Because it's better for my business.
But in the product listing I see always the stock: I would hide in this section too!

Admin> Configuration> Product Listing , turn it off there too.

I don't know very well all the file of this wonderful ecommerce system; I will appreciate if you help me to change quantity image instead of quantity numer.
