Anything is possible with zen if you work with it.
I personally have designed everything from the standard zen site with simple color / background changes to my 2 most current designs which are using custom coded sidebars, pages, and flip thru different templates to achieve the clients request.
It's all in how comfortable you are with editing the files and how much customizing you want to do.

Simple to replicate. would take a bit of custom code to duplicate some of the features, but not that difficult.
