How do I change the size of a category name box

I'm not talking about the boxes on the main screen but for example when I add a category :

Edit Category

and then :
Category Name:

Can I change the number of characters that I'm allowed to have for this heading?

I've tried fiddling but all I've done is mess things up!

the cat boxes width are set in admin > config > layout settings > left or right column boxes width and you also need to set the l or r column width to match
