Zencart images here's my assumption..

Hi all,

About zencart image.. here's what my assumptions are, please
correct me if I am wrong.

My setting will be:
Small 160x160 px
Medium 300x300px
Large 500x500px.

So what I understand is.. the image that is tagged when we create a product within the product image field should be the small thumbnail image.

  • The product display image should be named as <file_name>_med.jpg
and should be uploaded to the \image\medium directory

  • The larger image that is shown by zencart when the user click larger image
should be named <file_name>_lrg.jpg and should be uploaded within \image\large diectory

Is that correct?

Thank,
dhermanus

They're quite large images - watch your load times and bandwidth if you have a lot of them, and make sure you optimise them

Better sizes might be:

100px wide - small
200px wide - medium
300px wide - large

Make sure you use UPPERcase for the suffixes:

ie. _MED _LRG

There's a mini tutorial by Linda here:

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

Thanks Linda... that really answers my quetion.

Well, I think the small image 100px thumbnails is too small to entice the visitor..
what do you think?

What do you mean by optimise the image? :lookaroun

Thanks,

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

It depends how much detail you need to show about your products in a list view. My site currently uses 100 px max height/width, 175 px for the medium images, and varying for the large (usually ~325 px or so, but sometimes larger).

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

I was reading a british web magazine about images... it's really a great article on images for website.. I wish I could post it here for everyone to read.. but I don't think that's legal.. but it did mention about .png graphic file... so how come that zc don't support these type of files?

You can use jpg, gif, or png images in Zen Cart.

That wouldn't be the same magazine that did a 4 page article on fonts and boldy declared that white text on a black background was a strain on the eye...and the article was presented as white text on black!! :shocking:

Incidentally, I disagree with Pixxi about the large image size; I think that should be between 500-750px wide and up to 550px deep depending on just how much detail you want to give your viewer. A correctly optimised 640 x 480 for example will be around 45kb and is only accessed when required, so the only time bandwidth is likely to be a problem is if you have a LOT of visitors...and if that happens, then you can afford your bandwidth!! :wink2:

The png issue is more to do with the way IE doesn't display them properly (sometimes!)

 wakakak.. NOPE... It's call Arts Special...

I think this magazine is more on the graphic or graphic design than about
websites... but it's a pretty good magazine..

That doesn't look like an image problem. Check your .centercolumn padding numbers and reduce if need be.

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

:dontgetit Hi all,

from Linda's posting...

She mentioned that the small listing image of products sits in the base/root
image folder of zc. Can we set it somewhere else so that it's nice and
tidy... like.. /image/small folder for the small pics?

thx.

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

What you could do is have something like...

images/these_products/image01.jpg
images/medium/these_products/image01_MED.jpg
images/large/these_products/image01_LRG.jpg

Or you can just use ImageHandler2 and upload all images to images/ and forget about everything else as it does the work for you.

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

Hi,

I recently upgraded to zen cart 1.3.5 and before with the previous zen carts, I was able to use the setting define('DIR_WS_IMAGES', '/'); so that both my images stored on my host plus images stored on another host would show. Now it's define('DIR_WS_IMAGES', 'images/');
and even when I take the word images out, it comes back. Do you know where in the code that it's forcing my images to be /catalog/images/ ?

TIA

Re: Zencart images here's my assumption..

Ok, I now have it where it doesn't put the /images/ in the link to the images but it still puts the /catalog/ part in there and I need to try to get that out so I can use it both for images stored on my site and images stored on the wholesaler's site.
