1.3.6 Patch (Changed files only) coming soon?

With no intent whatsoever of casting disparity on ANYONE. I am reminded of the "Too many cooks spoil the broth."

Without having all files, the possibility of missing something changed locally that could affect the overall site is tremendous.

Take the time to get all the files, get used to using WinMerge (or similar) to verify, and (as Ajeh says) you might even learn something along the way.:yes:

If you plan to email copies of files back and forth, please be prepared to provide support back and forth for those files as well.

Just wondered if there was going to be a patch version for only the changed files coming out for 1.3.6.

The reason we have not provided a "changed files only" zip stems as a direct result from the multitude of problems encountered by people grabbing the "changed files only" zip thinking they could magically upgrade several version-steps at once using just the smaller fileset.

If you want to create your own changed-files-only fileset, it's very easy:
Using two new folders:

1. unzip the original v1.3.5 zip (or whatever "old" version you're upgrading "from")
2. unzip the original v1.3.6 zip (or whatever you're upgrading "to")
3. run WinMerge to compare the two folders
4. set the WinMerge "View" option to only "Show Identical Files" (not different, left, or right-only)
5. highlight all the listed identical files. (typically Select All is fine)
6. Right-click and choose "Delete Right", to remove all the files from the v1.3.6 folder that match the v1.3.5 folder.

Now, in the space of 6 minutes you have yourself your very own clean set of "change files only" in your v1.3.6 folder.
If you want to double-check, compare all these remaining files vs the changelog in the /docs folder, which already lists all these filenames for you.

LOL Well really you should be saying "Use Zen Magic and you shouldnt have to worry about it!" (except for parts of the admin area of course). I shouldn't really have a problem with the full upgrade as I do use 99% zen magic. The Admin area I only have a few files changed so it's not an issue. I was just curious to see if you were gonna make one before I went to the trouble. There was one made last time and if you are gonna start us out on the crack... then you gotta keep getting us high! :p

But I have nothing more to learn.. Im Totally Zenned :)

While updating to 1.3.5 I already installed a fresh admin, and patched it with my own changes. Now I am going to do a fresh install for both the catalog and admin and apply my paulm_patch.zip file to it :D

I must say that, although the updates aren't always fun, it become easier all the time to make changes to the Zen Cart script, touching the core files less and less :thumbsup:

I am grateful that the smart folks at ZenCart are making all these changes to guard against attacks so that I don't have to. Contribution made this morning. Thank you!

Ya I did that for 1.3.1 as well but that was because I didnt have Zen-Magic set up fully. Now that I do, it would be wiser to just upgrade and keep a list and backup of the few files that can't be ZM'd yet. Especially with over 20 contribs.. that can be a pain to install those again.

Its an expression describing the override system that Zen-cart uses. Where you can redirect the path of the original file without changing the core files so you always have a fall back to the working files if you make any custom changes and can't figure out what isn't working.

comes in handy too when upgrading because the core files will just replace the core files and wont replace your customized changes.

Ok that clarifies it. I thought I was well versed in the override system as I have used it since my first install of zencart which was back at about v1.14. However I noticed something earlier today that makes me wonder if I missed something.

It used to be that the override system didn't work in Admin, just the store section. I noticed tonight that some mods I had installed for 1.35 are in a custom folder in Admin. I don't know whether to move them or leave them.

As of 1.3.x, there are still no overrides folders in the admin related to custom templates.
(There are some product-type overrides, but they are note related to any folders named similar to your custom templates, and, unless you're using custom product types, you won't be affected by them.)

... but there are the "extra_*" directories for adding new things. These also exist in the catalog and are a nice time-saver when it comes time to upgrade. Thanks, Dr. Byte!

Excuse my ignorance. Am I right that I can just upload the files WinMerge says have changes in them (letting them overwrite the ones from ver 1.3.5)? If none are also ones that I have customized in my 'custom_template' file, then I am done and current? I don't have to run the installer or anything with the database?

I am also thinking I can ignore the images files even though WinMerge left them amongst the 'changed' files. I would guess those 'included example gifs' were not changed. But if not, since WinMerge included them among the other changed files is this a flag that WinMerge wasn't done correctly? This is the first time I used WinMerge. It seemed easy, so maybe too easy and I didn't do something right in the project set up for comparison.

well... you DO need the installer.. that upgrades the database.

As far as diffs in files, you can probably tell anything that is dated post Sept 6th, 2006 is probably a new file so that may help you bypass winmerge except in files that you have customizations for.

Okay, so I can upload the 'changed files' and then run the installer just to update the database. Correct?

If I keep up with each update I can do it this way, too?

I don't know how to back up my database and in case something went wrong, how to 'hook' in the back up. I guess that is my main problem and hope to learn that today before doing anything so I don't have to pay everytime I need it done. :-)

Thanks to all here who are so helpful. I would really be lost without it. If I can ever bill my customer for this I do plan on donating to this.
