A few weird errors

G'day Zen Community,

I am putting the finishing touches on https://www.headsonic.com.au

The site is showing a few weird errors:

  1. At time the Footer is not always loading
  2. Sometimes when clicking side product links (eg headphones) it loads a blank screen in the white area instead of a product list like normal (appears to happen 25% of the time).
  3. At times, it seems that the white area is pushed to the side at random (once again, about 25% of the time) (see image)

I am unsure if these are all possibly linked with something not loading entirely? I just performed a full upgrade of Zen - so I know every file is in there and fine. Any ideas?

THankyou for all the help- Alex

Re: A few weird errors

Sounds like you are on an overloaded Server. Traceroute shows the Server you are on is extremely slow -- at least from Canada which shouldn't really matter.

I would say that Timeouts are happening before the page can grab necessary info from your database. This would explain blank content and/or things in general not loading as they should.

If you do a traceroute from your computer to your site, look to see what the Ping times are. For me it shows in the 200+ range, which is why I say the Server is slow.

The learning is in the doing.

Re: A few weird errors

The Server is from Australia - might explain your slowness (sometimes when loading the hompage it doesnt even show recent products).

I ran a tracert and get about 21ms, by the time it reaches the server it is
40,
40,
89,
42,
*,
*(timeout) at 14th hop

As the 'huge screenshot was deleted' ill post the link, which is https://www.headsonic.com.au/example.jpg

Is there any way to tell if the server sql is over-loaded or if this is another bug?

Re: A few weird errors

Hmm,

I just remembered I still have an older draft copy (headsonic.mediadiseno.com) uploaded which doesn't appear to be having these issues - can somebody please confirm. It's an older version - but these were happening before the update.

Re: A few weird errors

A slow server and a page size of near 700k is going to be a killer.

Re: A few weird errors

turn off the manufacturers sidebox for a minute ... does it fix it?

switch to Classic ... does it fix it?

turn on the manfactuers sidebox does it break it?

switch to your template ... does it break again?

Re: A few weird errors

An update - I turned the manufacturers box off and it is happening less frequently. It seems the mod I installed for HeadSonic was not compresing the images for him (I noticedone picture on the main page was 494 KB!). Safe to assume thats the problem?

Re: A few weird errors

Best way to test the speed:

Configuration > Logging: Display The Page Parse Time - true

Ideally, you want to see a Render Time of less than a second for both, Parse & Query Time.

Kim, can I ask where you got the output for "Global Statistics"?

Re: A few weird errors

Thanks WR - testing now.

I just installed ImageHandler which is making the images alot smaller. Ill try and get server reports to see if its over-loading.

Re: A few weird errors

Am hitting about 0.309 for the EZPages and 4.409 for Store pages - looks like I best get HS to ring the host.

Re: A few weird errors

Still got high parse times with massively compressed images.

Host is claiming a low load (.02 etc) with a low SQL load. He says there are unlimited SQL connections enabled on the account.

Any hints?

The problem is still occuring, but alot less frequently.

Re: A few weird errors

Thanks to Kim for mentioning the link to http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

Now we can see that it may not be your Host, Alex, although, saying they can provide 'unlimited' anything on a Server with limited resources, would have me concerned. It means every account has no connection limits and at peak times, that can really slow down a Server.

I see you've been working on the site though, as your Render times are much better than posted earlier.

The learning is in the doing.

Re: A few weird errors

Yeah thanks Rob,

The site is not actually mine - I'm the grunt worker, I use my own servers hehe.

Accounts do come limited, it is just this account for zen testing reasons that it can make unlimited SQL threads. Yeah, I've improved the Render times, it appears its a problem with ImageHandler and its creating files owned by user apache - it conflicts as its on a plesk server.

Your welcome for the help.

Appears to be bad form on the part of IH, creating files not owned by the account. Can make it difficult for the account Owner to work with those files -- and, as we can see -- also cause other problems as well.

Re: A few weird errors

Alex, thought I'd post some Render time info using the default install - no mods.

Index page: 177764 bytes (118462 bytes for images)
Parse Time: 0.794 - Number of Queries: 1218 - Query Time: 0.453

Might prove a good baseline to work with.

Re: A few weird errors

Thanks Rob,

I got the owners of the files changes - when the site tries to load those ones everything is fine and great times.

When it loads files not changed (as we all know IH changes images) it goes kablah! Hopign to figure out what to fix in the IH code soon.
