Consequences of PHP Safe Mode on?

The web hosting service I was planning to use does not permit PHP Safe Mode off. The Zencart installation FAQs say that Safe Mode off is recommended.
What would be the consequences of installing and running zencart with PHP Safe mode on? Would it work? What bits might not work...??

May I suggest that rather than using a service that is not Zen Cart and e-commerce friendly, that you check out our Certified Hosts?
