Running two installations on a single server?

While I do my upgrade, and while I do some renovations to my site, I would like to have two installations of Zen Cart installed, both accessing the same database. Will this work, or am I asking for trouble? Obviously, I'll back up my database before installing...

Re: Running two installations on a single server?

I've got 6 installations running on one server at this time, I suppose some of the hard core types have even more. I have never set it up where two installations use the same DB though, I think it would be a bad idea, especially if one is the live store and the other is a work in progress. There are posts on the forum and info in the help section on how to successfully do an update.

Re: Running two installations on a single server?

You could do that, but any changes made to either site via the Admin would affect both sites.

Because...???

Note, I'm not concerned with the ability to change the layout and such via the admin panel. My primary concern is that I'll be editing the PHP in my template, and I want to make sure not to break anything on the live site while I make the changes.

Seems like you answered your own question. The only way to be assured that no mistakes are made to the online store is to keep the databases separate along with the files.

Sounds like what I want to do. I am running my test site locally on my iMac and in order to also work on remotely I have had two zen cart directories each with their own configure.php files that work with remote logins to my compuer and local access to it via my browsers. What I want to do is do further testing and such at work and home and want to do a single database to do my upgrades. I want my fixes to affect my remote accesss as well as local acess for testing, except fo the fact that images load to one directory or another when I make a new product it seems to me that I could do my work in one or othe zen-cart and changes would be common to both?
