Front Page New Items?

I tried the developer's toolkit, and I can't figure this one out. What file controls the front page's spread of new items? It's just a stack right now for me and I want it to be 2-3 columns.

check admin -> configuration -> index listing ->

New Products Columns per Row
Featured Products Columns per Row
Special Products Columns per Row

Weird, it's set to 3, but it still only displays one column...
