Option of 2 or 3 step checkout

I would like the option to get rid of the checkout confirmation page. I think about 5% of my customers think that they have completed the order when they get to the checkout confirmation page and leave without confirmation the order. Some of these customers come back wanting to know where their order is and think poorly of me for not having their order.

Re: Option of 2 or 3 step checkout

Why not add a nice big red line that says:

REVIEW AND COMPLETE YOUR ORDER TODAY!!

It would be a lot smoother on the code and customers that really need to do a review before saying buy it all!!

Otherwise you will get the customers that say ...

What the heck?! I never even got to review my order!!

Linda,

what about making a popup available on this page, asking if they are sure they want to leave without confirming the order?
I think there was a contribution for this to osC.

Much nicer and eyecatching than a big red text.. ;)

I had this exact same concern. As Cardell suggests, try using the Order Steps contribution. In addition to that, I had to change some text included in the checkout process as it is not as intuitive as it could be.

I also had to change the Registration Success page as I had a customer think he had placed the order after merely signing up. At least, that's the only customer I know about who did that.....there may have been others as well....

The order steps mod works great. One change I made to it and to the regular checkout process is have 4 steps instead of 3. Just in case customers who get to the confirmation page dont think they are done. Or in other words, 1. payment, 2. shipping, 3. confirmation, 4. success!. So on each page it says, 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc.

That is my concern exactly. When a person gets to a "Step 3 of 3" he might think he's finished, when he's really on page 3 of 4. I inserted a graphic on that third page saying quite clearly to review the order and click on "Confirm Order" if everything is fine.

One thing I do think is lacking with the checkout process is that it is not entirely intuitive. It's best to prepare for the "lowest common denominator", or the customer who is most clueless when it comes to buying online.
